Stolen Prayer Lyrics
I walk the streets alone
On feeble bones I ride
My sins are etched in stone
I got no place to hide
Well, I was unshakable
In what I did believe
I feel so breakable
But have I been deceived
You showed me your paradise
And your carnival of souls
But my heart keeps telling me
That ain't the place to go
Well, I'm not invincible
So I want you to leave
Well, I'm so convincible
But have I been deceived
I take your words and try them on
Yeah, it's a perfect fit, boy
You tell me one size fits us all
Yeah, like an old straightjacket
Well, tell me why I'm so afraid
All my words are spoken
All my words are spoken
All my words are spoken
In a stolen prayer
I remember yesterday
When things were black and white
Never thought I'd get confused
On what was wrong and right
Well, I'm not unbreakable
With armor on my skin
Well, it's not unthinkable
I could be fooled again
I take your words and try them on
Yeah, it's a perfect fit, boy
You tell me one size fits us all
Yeah, like an old straightjacket
Well, tell me why I'm so afraid
All my words are spoken
All my words are spoken
All my words are spoken
In a stolen prayer
You steal another minute from my life
You cut a little deeper with your knife
You steal a little breath from my air
And you don't care
And even though I'm chokin'
All my words are spoken
I take your words and try them on
Yeah, it's a perfect fit, boy
You tell me one size fits us all
Yeah, like an old straightjacket
Take this world and try it on
Man, you're lookin' good boy
Stick your neck out on the block
So you won't miss nothing
Stretch your finger, grab your hair
Don't you feel like screaming
Feel the blood rush from your veins
Now you're a perfect zombie
Now I'm on my knees
All my words are spoken (5x)
In a stolen prayer
On feeble bones I ride
My sins are etched in stone
I got no place to hide
Well, I was unshakable
In what I did believe
I feel so breakable
But have I been deceived
And your carnival of souls
But my heart keeps telling me
That ain't the place to go
Well, I'm not invincible

Seems like it's about facing new difficulties, new problems, and how your previous conceptions were wrong. It also seems to be about a sort of disspaointment, like something that was taught by someone important and that meant a lot turned out not to be true.
Absolutely awesome song, shamefully underrated, although I think that there s no version that is performed exclusively by Chris Cornell.
btw there is a version by Cornell himself. Its a demo and it s abit distorted, definately worth ith though. Cornell's voice is still amazign and he does soem awesome screams.

The album itself was a running story and this song fits in with rest of them. The Album loosly reminded of the movie Something Wicked This Way Comes. The album Is about a traveling carnival that collects people souls. In this song the person relaizes the ring leader, is promiosing the world, but it's all lies just trying to get his soul. Great song tho...and of course it can meaning far beyond the contruct of the albums plotline.
I'm not too sure of what it means... To me it's repentance, realizing that you lost faith... I don't know, it's a great song, though.
This song is so well written. The lyrics are so deep. This has got to be one of my top ten songs. Im not sure what its about....seems to be about finding yourself and figuring out the way the world really is. I love the lyrics :
"You showed me your paradise And your carnival of souls But my heart keeps telling me That ain't the place to go Well, I'm not invincible So I want you to leave"
Great song.
my fav alice song... im not sure what it means but its not one of his more popular songs and that kills me cause its so awsome
Sweet song. Originally wrote and recorded by Chris Cornell. He gave this and Unholy War to cooper. I got the original demo by Chris and its amazing how similar they sound (no kids in his though).
yeh tanner chris cornell does the backing vocals in this one, i cant find the one cornell does by himself though, only this version.
i have the cornell demo of it, its got a quite distorted vocal and guitar. Very well written, easy to play over a basic chord progression. love it.
To me the song is about clinging to the last remnants of youthful idealism but accepting the demands of pragmatism in our adult lives.
The young always want to change the world in big, dramatic and instant ways. They want make to make the world fairer, to make leaders and politicians more accountable and institutions more responsive and all in grand and heroic ways.
As we grow older we say to our more cautious inner voices we will 'take your words and try them on' because accepting the limitatons of 'an old straitjacket' and a conformity to 'one size fits us all' rather than embracing differences and new ideas is the place our head tells us is necessary but our hearts say 'ain't the place to go'.
In the end the song is about us never truly accepting the realities we all have to come to terms with as adults and hoping we can make a small difference to the world. But not as the firebrand revolutionary leaders we once dreamed of being but in our small 'stolen prayer' that our little acts can accumulate and make a big difference.
This is a great song! I think this song is Alice talking about his faith life. This was around the point in his life when, as Alice says, he was feeling a 'spiritual hunger.' In this song I think he's praying, but his words are not his own, they're stolen. He takes the words (Bible) and tries them on, and one size fits all, but he's afraid because he doesn't know what this world has in for him, because it's not his words, he's praying a stolen prayer.
