I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone who's torn it apart
And she`s taken almost all that I´ve got
But if you want I´ll try to love again
Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know, the first cut is the deepest
And it come to bein' lucky she's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me she's worst
But when it comes to being loved she's first
Thats how I know

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
And I'm sure gonna give you a try
And if you wanna try to love again
Baby, I try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know, the first cut is the deepest
And when it come to bein' lucky she's curst
When it come to lovin' me she's worst
But when it comes to being loves she's first
Thats how I know

I still want you by my side
Just to help me try the tears that I've cry
And I'm sure gonna give you a try
But if you want, I'll try to love again
Baby, I try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know, the first cut is the deepest
And it come to bein' lucky she's curst
When it come to lovin' me she's worst

    My Interpretation

I think most here have the idea of what the song means.

I would have given you all of my heart = new love But there's someone who's torn it apart = ex girlfriend Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know/The first cut is the deepest = I'll try to love again but the first heart break hurts the most. And it come to bein' lucky she's cursed = she is an unlucky woman somehow things don't go well with her When it comes to lovin' me she's worst = she didn't know how to love & treat him in the relationship

Conclusion He has a new love interest but still his heart is broken from his first love. His ex was is an unlucky woman that did not know how to treat or love him right.

I think this song talks about the pains of first platonic love. The person in the song loves someone but she does not love him back. To make things worse another person loves him instead. He knows that he can't forget his first love but he does not want to hurt the latter either. So he says "I'll try to love again". The song is very successful in expressing the feelings that are hard to express.

I don't exactly see it that way...i.e. about not wanting to hurt the "other person." It is simply about how the writer is reluctant to get involved with a new love after being hurt deeply by his "first love."

It is also somewhat ambiguous -- there are two ways to look at, "The first cut is the deepest." 1. The "first cut" leaves him deeply hurt. 2. the next love(s) may not be as hurtful. So he may be on the one hand, reluctant to start a new love affair, but on the other hand realizing that if it goes bad that the hurt won't be as deep as the first.

Also...the line, "when it comes to being lucky she's cursed." could be ambiguios as well. i.e. is she "cursed" with being lucky? i.e. very attractive to other men? having to deal with many men who are seeking her affection? Thoughts?

I believe the song is about his love for his first girl being his deepest; and him trying to communicate that to his new love.

His first true love broke up with him and that hurt him deeply and emotionally. He truely loved her and gave all his heart to her but she tore it apart when she broke up with him. Thats why he can't love like that anymore but he is willing to give it a try.

He loves his new girlfriend but is still emotionally affected by his first true love which he says he is over but would probably go back to her in an instant.

With the line; "when it comes to being lucky she's cursed." she may be cursed with good looks and a very appealing quality which meant other men always approached her until she broke.... uno?/

I really don't know what to make of the last two lines in the refrain. I don't know why he'd call her unlucky. I do think this song is about him being so heartbroken/hurt over his old relationship that it's given him this baggage that he can't go over to be with this other chick.

Ah, you totally forgot the last line of the chorus: "But when it comes to being loved, she's first."

yeah, i noticed the missing line too. I think it's important, coz it shows that he's still bitter and not completely over the break up.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Sunglasses at Night
Corey Hart
In the 1980s, sunglasses were a common fashion for people who wanted to adopt a "tough guy" persona (note all the cop shows from that era -- Simon & Simon, Miami Vice, etc. -- where the lead characters wore shades). So I think this song is about a guy who wears shades as a way of hiding his insecurity after learning that his girlfriend is cheating on him. He's trying to pretend that he's a "tough guy" to hide the fact that his girlfriend's affair is disturbing him.
