Four Chords That Made A Million Lyrics
Six of one a half a dozen
Black guitars and plastic blues
Hide behind a wall of nothing
Nothing said and nothing new
4 Chords that made a million
You belong there on the cover
You are the emperor in new clothes
A man who thinks he owns the future
Will sell your vacuum with his prose
4 Chords that made a million
And then a moron with a cheque book
Will take you out to lunch who knows ?
He will tell you you're a saviour
And then he'll drop you like a stone
4 Chords that made a million
And I have tried and I have died
Trying to get through
But in the end I can't defend you.
4 Chords that made a million
Black guitars and plastic blues
Hide behind a wall of nothing
Nothing said and nothing new
You are the emperor in new clothes
A man who thinks he owns the future
Will sell your vacuum with his prose
Will take you out to lunch who knows ?
He will tell you you're a saviour
And then he'll drop you like a stone
Trying to get through
But in the end I can't defend you.

The song title references Pachelbel's Canon, a very simple chord progression used very often in popular music as evidenced by this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHBVnMf2t7w
First of all I just have to say that porcupine tree are an amazing band. I think this song is about how bands that aren't even skilled at what they do end up making it big.

I'll have to agree with sepultribe99 on both statements he made.
cough blink182 cough
he writes many songs about the deplorable state of popular, mainstream music... this is obviously one of them
Good song. Like everyone said, it's about the music industry and how "4 chords make a million" basically stating that the same stuff is being played over and over again by a million different bands and how they really aren't original anymore, or even good.
Did anyone else immediatly think of 'smells like teen spirit' when they heard the song title.
Even before i'd actually heard the song thats what thought sprung into my mind
@ytse-marmalade yes, it's a pretty obvious answer. but I'm sure Steve has some respect for them as well. I mean, songs don't just take over modern music by accident.
Plus hey, Boston did it in 1976 with "More Than a Feeling"

Ironic how Porcupine Tree has songs with 4 chords.
I dont know if they mean a particular song or group. Nirvana is mentioned here, and Blink182. When I first heard the song, I also tried to guess what song they could mean.
I think it is about music industry in general, perhaps about "Nu Metal" groups, Steven Wilson seems to dislike them (or at least he uses this term for commercial-oriented bands who play all the same stuff), if you listened to his interviews on the PT website.
I dont know, I think the meaning of the song is quite obvious here... unlike other PT tracks. This might be because it is much more a political statement than lyrical art... you know?
