Feel So Low Lyrics
So see how long I can last
You can pretend that I don't exist for you
And I can laugh about it now
But I hated every minute
I was waiting for your email
And each day that you forgot to call
Just made me feel so low
So low
Christmas 1998
I tried to call
I just couldn't wait
And your message was out of date
So I left my voice on your machine
But you did not respond
OK OK OK you've won
You make me feel so low
So low
You can pretend that I don't exist for you
And I can laugh about it now
But I hated every minute
I was waiting for your email
And each day that you forgot to call
Just made me feel so low
So low
I tried to call
I just couldn't wait
And your message was out of date
So I left my voice on your machine
But you did not respond
OK OK OK you've won
You make me feel so low
So low

I agree with what most people have said here that it is about a relationship in which the other person didn't even act like he existed. I also feel that the lyrics "So Low" in the song have a double meaning. As it is written you read "So Low" which represents the sadness or depression he feels, while when heard it can be heard as Solo, which would describe the lonliness or the feeling of being by himself that he is feeling. Brilliant Song by an amazing band!
I love this song, its about how even though he's been hurt by this person in the past and how that person has made him feel useless and insignificant he still attempted to make it work by leaving his voice on the answering machine, in the end it was useless because she never answered
My favorite line is "You can pretend that I don't exist for you and I can laugh about it now" because it describes a lot of relationships where even though at the time you felt depressed, looking back on it it's amusing to you because you've grown from it.
absentia prety much got it, i think. its prety much a song about a girl and what she's doing/did to him emotionally.
i'm very surprised that this song hasnt had more comments, this is one of those songs that you love right away (as are pretty much all of porcupine tree's material)
I think this song is so beautiful; it does just that--makes me "feel so low".
I don't really necessarily believe it's about a girlfriend; although, a few songs on Lightbulb Sun have come out of Wilson's experience & throughout this "breakup" album, Stupid Dream.
I actually, with more attentive views, thought it was about a Family Member. That perhaps he left home & his life was ever changing. I know that the moment you leave home, things DO change & you begin to think everyone you left there doesn't even know you anymore; it's all a void of emotion.
Then again, I also felt that Wilson could have made a point of this song being sort of sexual in a way; here's this guy in 1998, falling for a girl that didn't give him the time of day. The natural thing to do is attempt to keep trying with her. You get this stalkerish feel, & not necessarily a bad one, but definitely a way of overcoming, as the person has in this song.
I like the transition of past to present tense. Its clearly about someone expressing feelings for someone else who does not share the feelings.
I can't quite understand whether he/she has gotten over theiur feelings as the lines 'And I can laugh about it now' and 'You make me feel so low' are kind of contradictory.

I think, at the beginning of the song, he is trying to convince himself that all this no longer affects him. But as he dwells on it more, he realizes that it still haunts him and that he can no longer kid himself about it being water under the bridge.

I want to know to what person Steven wrote this... XD
This song makes me cry. It's incredibly beautiful. It's such an intense piece.
Agreed.
THE perfect sad song.
Beautiful song that has come to me at just the right time.
