This is the song I was named after but I spell it Sarah
One of the ultimate sacrifices of love. Letting the other person leave to find true happiness, even if it will kill you for the rest of your life.
Their dreams of happiness are just too different (we're fire and ice, the dream won't come true) and the only way for her to be happy is for her to leave him.
This is just a final message saying It couldn't work between us, but I will always love you.

You are so right, I'm one of those people, stuck in the past with the only first and true love in high school. Yes, that was 37 years ago. Self-loathing sounds so selfish, not sure I would call it that. Just a person who was cut like a knife without closure. I guess it's like they say, nothing will ever replace your first true love. The love of my life died of an overdose .. We had a tumultuous love … We couldn’t win cuz the battle was real .. no trust … but we loved each other .. soul ties . He lost his battle and I was mad at him before he moved on to heaven .. He reached out to me at the last minute .. I didn’t expect it and was never gone .. Like a sort of Romeo and Juliet .. only the dagger was his addiction .. I feel he sends me messages through songs .. this one has been playing in my head so I looked up the lyrics .. He’s telling me to move on .. I’ve been trying to find him and so I found one of his friends from his teen years and we’ve been getting closer to becoming a couple now .. I was looking for my deceased love in his friend … Fire and ice .. the dream won’t come true .. trying to make sense of it all and this song is a message to me … So hard to let go of my true love … Never got to say goodbye ..
lol, this song...Psychadelic? The psychadelic era of this Airplane/Starship trio died with the seventies. They even coasted through the mellow era. Now it's the..."we can't write our own music", synthesized era. But hey, whose to say it isn't good anyway. This song was the reason I became a big starship fan. Beautifully written. I love it when the to Wolf's team up and write.
But people, come on. Seriously, how has no one ever mentioned that this isn't Jefferson Starship!?!?! Kantner went off the deep end and sued Mickey and the gang's asses for using his band name. Then they ditched "Jefferson" to have a very cruddy name.
i hope people stop listening to this kind of music, and start to climb out of their self-loathing psychadelic love-struck "i can't live without you" states of mind. no seriously , great songs, but these soft rock ballads are gonna spike the depression rates i tell ya, sooner or later ,lol
