Give It A Name Lyrics
Give it a name, get it out of your home
Out in your backwoods, a doghouse you own
Give it a name like a howling blue hound
Chasing your fears, man he's hunting you down
Give it a name, get it out of your eye
Come from the dockland, got your low hanging high
Give it a name, though you call yourself saved
She's deep on your bone and it won't go away
Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity
And in the end we are what we pretend to be
Give it a name, get it out of your home
Out in your backwoods, a doghouse you own
Give it a name like a howling blue hound
Chasing your fears, man he's hunting you down
Give it a name, get it out of your eye
Come from the dockland, got your low hanging high
Give it a name, though you call yourself saved
She's deep on your bone and it won't go away
Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity
And in the end we are what we pretend to be
Out in your backwoods, a doghouse you own
Give it a name like a howling blue hound
Chasing your fears, man he's hunting you down
Come from the dockland, got your low hanging high

And in the end we are what we pretend to be

I like this song! It's GREAT!
You also forgot the final lines of the song: 'Separating self from dream, harsh reality. And though it hurts, embrace the truth and from fear be set free'
I believe that this song is about putting a name to your fears in order to overcome them. The way that he uses a dog chasing or hunting you down expresses this in a visual way that people can relate to. If you don't put a name to your fears you will exaggerate them in your mind. Very interesting song, as most of Jerry's are. Very emotionally deep man. Love it.
This song kicks ass!!
I know it sounnds comepletely cray but when I hear this song, all it makes me think of is a stray animal that is around all the time.
"Give it a name like a howling blue hound"
Jerry used to have a pet dog that was a Bluetick Coonhound (a breed related to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne). It was called 'Monkey'. Hence, "fed the monkey man" from 'Between' on the Boggy Depot LP.
Always thought this song could/should have been a single. Very f**king cool.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity And in the end we are what we pretend to be"
Yet more Jerry genius.
@AnglerRising I always thought that the "monkey man" was his drug dealer, because he had a "monkey on his back" from a significant coke habit back in the day. So "feeding the monkey man" meant paying his dealer for his regular supply of coke (much like Layne did with his own heroin "monkey man").

Geez. Jerry\'s guitar talents are truly matched by his lyric writing. These lines hit me so hard: "Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity, and in the end we are what we pretend to be." He has said numerous times that musicians tend to steal from one another, but through that, soon one finds their own voice. So are we being ourselves or are we simply pretending? We need to embrace our fears, walk through them, and in the end we can be set free from them.
