"Give It A Name" as written by and Jerry Cantrell....
Give it a name, get it out of your home
Out in your backwoods a doghouse you own
Give it a name like a howling blue hound
Chasing your fears man he's hunting you down

Give it a name, get it out of your eye
Come from the dockland got your low hangin' high
Give it a name, though you call yourself saved
She's deep on your bone and it won't go away

Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity
And in the end we are what we pretend to be

Give it a name, get it out of your home
Out in your backwoods a doghouse you own
Give it a name like a howling blue hound
Chasing your fears man he's hunting you down

Give it a name, get it out of your eye
Come from the dockland got your low hangin' high
Give it a name, though you call yourself saved
She's deep on your bone and it won't go away

Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity
And in the end we are what we pretend to be

Separating self from dream, harsh reality
And though it hurts, embrace the truth and from fear be set free

General CommentI like this song! It's GREAT!

You also forgot the final lines of the song:
'Separating self from dream, harsh reality.
And though it hurts, embrace the truth and from fear be set free'

General CommentI believe that this song is about putting a name to your fears in order to overcome them. The way that he uses a dog chasing or hunting you down expresses this in a visual way that people can relate to. If you don't put a name to your fears you will exaggerate them in your mind. Very interesting song, as most of Jerry's are. Very emotionally deep man. Love it.

General Comment"Give it a name like a howling blue hound"

Jerry used to have a pet dog that was a Bluetick Coonhound (a breed related to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne). It was called 'Monkey'. Hence, "fed the monkey man" from 'Between' on the Boggy Depot LP.

Always thought this song could/should have been a single. Very f**king cool.

"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity
And in the end we are what we pretend to be"

    Yet more Jerry genius.
