I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen now
When exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen now
When exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Soho's "Hippychick" did indeed sample "How Soon Is Now", but the riff is itself borrowed - from Can's 1976 "I Want More", while the howling guitar refrain is a straight lift from Led Zeppelin's "The Rain Song".
The club referred to is the Hacienda in Manchester where Morrissey endured some particularly depressing nights in the early 1980s.

Has Marr said it was in homage to the Can song? I'll concede "I Want More" and "How Soon is Now?" have a vague similarity... Perhaps I've missed it because the Smiths and Can are such completely different kinds of bands. Or because I rarely listen to Can albums recorded after Damo Suzuki left (except Landed).

OTOH the Buzzcocks sound nothing like Can either, and Pete Shelley--another major force in the Manchester scene, incidentally--was crazy about them. Does anybody really sound like Can? Not even other German prog. bands from the same period. Well...their influence can be heard in PiL's Metal Box (no surprise that Jah Wobble later collaborated with Jazi Liebezeit).
