Head Over Feet Lyrics

I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
I thought about it

You treat me like I'm a princess
I'm not used to liking that
You ask how my day was

You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for
That's not lip service

You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience

You're the best listener that I've ever met
You're my best friend
Best friend with benefits
What took me so long

I've never felt this healthy before
I've never wanted something rational
I am aware now
I am aware now

You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

This song is so great. I love it. To me it means how he got her once, even though she was maybe scared of it, because she's scared of commitment, and then she says "don't be suprised if I fall, head over feet"...meaning she DOES like/love him, she's just unsure/scared. She's saying how that the guy she loves is her best friend and that he's always there for her... Reminds me of my and the guy in my life.. =]

I can't begin to tell what this song means to me. Two years ago, a good friend told me that he was in love with me. He likes this song a lot. Now I have turned the tables. Now I am in love with him. Now he also has a girlfriend. I'm not sure if he is still in love with me now because things have gotten a little shaky in the communication department, but whenever I hear this song, I think of him. That is only a tiny sliver of what this song means to me.

@Mesha When I read a comment like this from 15 years ago I can't help but wonder how it turned out in the end. Ehh... :)

@Mesha Please tell us where this went. I am really curious.

Songwriters often compose a first draft of their lyrics that is deeply personal, and sometimes this may strike the listener as offensive, or perhaps the censors as inappropriate.

I think this is one of those instances. Consider the lyrics:

Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole You're so much braver than I gave you credit for That's not lip service

Doesn't make all that much sense right away. Seems kind of retroverted like an ee cummings poem, right? Well, actually it probably is about "lip service", because she hints about him reciprocating on her and "holding your breath" in the next lyric. Following this with joyful harmonicas pulsating back and forth and it's pretty clear what's going on. Shift around some pronouns and fill in the blank (since "love" is often used as a stand-in for certain other words in pop music) and you get:

Your **** is thick, and I swallowed it whole I'm so much braver than you gave me credit for.

Best friend with benefits, indeed.

Alanis isn't afraid to sing about raw sexuality, but I think with this song she or one of her producers realized she took it a little too far with her original lyrics for the 1990s.

My Opinion

yah i agree with catherineks this sond makes me happy for her its so simple yet magical ...if she is singing about a certain person she has had a relationship wit he is a lucky guy...its so positive and she phrases his qualities/everything she likes bout him soo well
