Time (Tom Waits cover) Lyrics
Well, the smart money's on Harlow
And the moon is in the street
The shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you're east of East St. Louis
And the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
Napoleon is weeping in the Carnival saloon
His invisible fiance is in the mirror
The band is going home
It's raining hammers, it's raining nails
Yes, it's true, there's nothing left for him down here
[Chorus:]
And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
That you love
And it's Time Time Time
And they all pretend they're Orphans
And their memory's like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you can't remember
Tell the things you can't forget that
History puts a saint in every dream
Well she said she'd stick around
Until the bandages came off
But these mamas boys just don't know when to quit
And Matilda asks the sailors are those dreams
Or are those prayers
So just close your eyes, son
And this won't hurt a bit
[Chorus]
Well, things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl
The boys just dive right off the cars
And splash into the streets
And when she's on a roll she pulls a razor
From her boot and a thousand
Pigeons fall around her feet
So put a candle in the window
And a kiss upon his lips
Till the dish outside the window fills with rain
Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart
And pay the fiddler off till I come back again
And the moon is in the street
The shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you're east of East St. Louis
And the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
Napoleon is weeping in the Carnival saloon

i love this song....but i haven't the faintest clue what it means. it's really interesting imagery, though, isn't it? and it's sung with such emotion. i would like to hear others' thoughts on it
@Jenna1492 I can love it without fully understanding it. Sort of like Paul Simon's Graceland.

uh i don't really know either... to me it sounds like a mother who's losing her child? i know this song's about a woman, and that it was written by Tom Waits.. but i love that song as well. she really does amazing covers.
but we have to give credit to Tom Waits first for writing this beautiful song.
yeah bof, it is about death. obviously empathized by the chorus (it's time) but you can tell it's from death's point of view, ex:
So just close your eyes, son And this won't hurt a bit
Death says before it takes a life
Death's perception of the ones left behind after a death: And they all pretend they're Orphans And their memory's like a train You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away And the things you can't remember Tell the things you can't forget that -they try to supress the memories & pain.
History puts a saint in every dream Well she said she'd stick around Until the bandages came off -they have their religion to lean against in their time of sorrow, while grieveing. But time heals all wounds, so the saint only sticks around for a while, until the survivors are strong again which is fairly true: most people become more religious after a loss of a family member or friend
beautiful & sad song, kudos to tori for all the excellent covers - the strange little girls album is phenomenal, not to mention the corresponding artwork.

i've read somewhere that it's about death. tori is writing from death's POV as she goes around taking people's lives. but...it still doesn't make total sense.
