Star 69 Lyrics

you don't have to take the bar exam to see
what you've done is ignoramus 103
what've I got to hang my hat on
you don't have a pot to pee in
all this just to be your friend
I was there until the end.
extortion and arson, petty larceny

I know you called - I know you called - I know you called -
I know you called - I know you called - I know you hung up my line
star 69

I know all about the warehouse fire
I know squirrelys didn't chew the wires
3 people have my number
the other 2 were with me.
I don't like to tell-tell but I'm not your patsy.
this time you have gone too far with me.

I know you called - I know you called - I know you called -
I know you called - I know you called - I know you hung up my line
star 69

why'd you put your quarter down on me?
this reads like some dork inside edition hard copy.
I can't be your character witness
I can't be your alibi
doorbell rings it's the FBI
we learned spy vs. spy
you my friend, are guilty as can be.

I know you called - I know you called - I know you called -
I know you called - I know you called - I know you hung up my line
I know you called - I know you called - I know you called -
I know you called - I know you called - I can't be your alibi

Star 69 is Automatic Call Back telephone service in the USA. It allows you to automatically redial the last incoming call to your phone line by dialing *69

I suppose this song is about the mind games people play when calling each other. Someone is guilty of calling him. I don't know why he is guilty or what he is guilty of, however. Maybe this song is a response to someone who mysteriously calls him but acts like he doesn't exist or plays some other games.

Seems to me one of his friends did something illegal (perhaps literally burned a warehouse down? I dunno) and is now turning to him for an alabi. Thanks to *69 and the fact that the only other people with the number were with the recipient, he knows who called him and who committed the crime. Sounds like he's going to turn his buddy in too. Then again, maybe that's a bit to litteral of an interpretation...

I think JackR is right. Also I think that the guy who committed the crime is trying to put the blame on the narrator too, or at least, the character from whose point of view the story is told is trying to distance himself from the whole mess that his friend has caused.

There's a connection between this song and "Star me Kitten" from Automatic For The People. On both songs, there is Star in the title, and they mention two other people who "have the keys"/"have the number". The same characters are mentioned in both songs, which is something Michael Stipe does sometimes.

@yellowtt

Wrong, 'Star me Kitten' is actually called 'Fuck me Kitten' the word star is used in place of the far more traditional '****' to indicate a swear word.

@daveallen71 Obviously.
