A Moment Of Clarity Lyrics
I would describe it as an invisible darkness
Casting a shadow, a blinding black
Guarded by hope, my soul is kept safe from
The bloody claws
Look to beyond, what vision lets me see
Time after time, unneeded misery
My dreams I own, no price for you
I grip them tight and hope for sight.
Open my eyes wide to see a moment of clarity
Confusion gone, it's in your hands
Your turn to ask why.
Life is like a mystery
With many clues, but with few anwers
To tell us what it is that we can do to look
For messages that keep us from the truth
Casting a shadow, a blinding black
Guarded by hope, my soul is kept safe from
The bloody claws
Time after time, unneeded misery
My dreams I own, no price for you
I grip them tight and hope for sight.
Confusion gone, it's in your hands
Your turn to ask why.
With many clues, but with few anwers
To tell us what it is that we can do to look
For messages that keep us from the truth

Death... Words can't express it (the band). Fucking amazing. The musical compisition, the lyrical composition. Chuck Shuldiner, awesome writer, awesome compposer, awesome fucking guitarist. Richard Christi, fucking INCREDIBLE drummer... This is a good song, like any Death song.
It's not certainly about religion. It may be, it's up to you. It is about a person, actually, about every of us. We seek answers, we ask "why?", but when somehow we get the truth - we realize that doesn't satisfy us, because the truth is shocking, or we don't even get an answer, because it's impossible to answer some quesitons. Look at the world, the death (- for example, among many another 'evil' things) that is everywhere around us, isn't it sad? How can you smile in a world which is so depressing? So we create this "invisible darkness" which separates our view, creating an artifical reality which makes us happy, ignoring the actual reality, and we hold tight to it, because if we face the actual reality, it's going to get us with its "bloody claws" doing only harm and giving only unneeded misery. Chuck also points out the irony, that we are hugging our own lies, yet searching for truth.. But then the melody changes, at least i feel like it's not a depressing song... it gives you strenght, because even if all our beliefs, all the lies we created to hide ourselves from the reality are nothing more but lies... we still fight! We don't stop, and we try to make the illusions reality, until death, because this is the only thing keeping us alive. So we eventually don't search for the truth. We live because of our beliefs. So the truth asks us... "Why?" - why are we doing all this? Both sides don't have an answer. We - liars, and the reality - truth..Because it's not the world that doesn't make sense, it's us who don't make sense in this world. So it's beautiful that we still try, even without a purpose, and only illusions we believe in. Even though in the end nothing matters.
"you" in this song is basically the "truth" or something like a non-judgmental view. "I own no price for you" - without judgement, we are all worth the same. Nothing. "Your turn to ask why" - and this "non-judgmental view" should finally ask us: for what sake are you even trying? How can you have a desire if nothing matters? "moment of clarity" - something like a rush of confidence about our beliefs, and being ready to keep living.
Chuck Schuldiner, the only person whose lyrics hit me so deep... \m/ !
@Kubot3 The most complex and accurate interpretation from all comments. Thx

It's a track that talks about some discoveries that everyone has sooner or later - I say; it includes also relying with your past. In some moments, things appear in front of you with absolute clarity, as if you saw them on a cinema screen. They are moments that can change your life!"
i think its about holding on to a hope or dream you cant possibly get but still try for it anyway. It slowly ruins you but you wont give it up as you are "guarded by hope" you wont sell your dreams. slowly you realize there could be a problem with your obsession but ignore the idea. then suddenly it hits you. you have a problem and need to stop some how.
Happy Birthday Chuck!
I agree with Michael G., I think its about how things may seem hazy or confusing in the past or at some point in time but in other moments everything can just become clear or appear right infront of you as if it was always there but you just couldn't perceive it, well thats what it means for me anyway. (Hence open my eyes wide to see a moment of clarity confusion gone.)
It looks like something between the Number of the Beast dream and the temptation of Christ, where Satan offers the kingdoms of the world and all that's on them. When you asks for a moment of clarity to see beyond the shadow, you see all the things that have there and you asks "why? There's no other option?" And, because of the seeing of the answers of the clues that just lead us far from the truth, we ask "oh, God, why?". That's a really legit state of mind that often come to us and, maybe because of something related of his cancer, he should have been on this.
brilliatn song, they got some real lyrics here, some other death metal bands are just for gruesome cartoonish gore which is good for entertainement but these guys got real meaning
good stuff
great classic stuff really impressed with these guys
I love this song, I agree with megafury, Chuck Shuldiner was a really talented song writter, I seriously can't say enough good things about these guys, they created death metal.
This is great song. Probably one of my favourite songs by them. That one riff, at about three minutes into the song, is pure amazement to me. Man, Death is classic. I can't say I've heard a song from them that I don't enjoy.
Chuck Schuldiner was an influence to so many, and he's deeply missed by many.
Is that what the song is about? Wow.. I never would have known.
