So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
This is a song about Susan
This is a song about the girl next door
This is a song about the everyday occurrences that make you feel like letting go
Yes I think we've got a problem
So much for the afterglow
This is a song about Susan
This is a song about the way things are
This is a song about the scary things you see from the corner of your eyes
Don't you wonder why?
We never talk about the future
We never talk about the past anymore
We never ask ourselves the questions to the answers that nobody even wants to know
I guess the honeymoon is over
So much for the afterglow
I remember we could talk about anything
I remember when we used to want to hang out
We never talk about the future
We never talk about the past anymore
We never ask ourselves the questions to the answers that nobody even wants to know
Oh well oh well oh well
So much for the afterglow
Oh well oh well oh well
Yes I guess we need the drama
So much for the afterglow

This is a song about Susan
these guys are awesome. somehow, they manage to blend grunge and pop on a record, and make it work. this song actually sounds like summer. the beach boys harmonies switching to blazing guitar is awesome. plus all the lyrics on the album, especially this song, are the greatest.
so true so right.
"Yes I guess we need the drama" - this line rings so true...

this is a song about being completely jaded. they dude thought he had a future, but everything falls apart and he realizes that there is nothing good in his days to come.
afterglow: The comfortable feeling following a pleasant experience; A lingering impression of past glory or success.
I think the definition and song title says it all.
Ahh! This is a really good song! It's just...good. da77yn is right, you just want to jam on your air guitar.
