Goodnight, my love
Remember me as you fall to sleep.
Fill your pockets with the dust and the memory,
That rises from the shoes on my feet.
I won't be back here
Though we may meet again.
I know, it's dark outside
Don't be afraid.
Every time I ever cried for fear,
Was just a mistake that I made.
Wash yourself in your tears,
And build your church
On the strength of your fears.
Please,
Listen to me,
Don't let go,
Don't let this desperate moonlight leave me,
With your empty pillow,
Promise me
The sun will rise again.
I, too, am tired now
Embracing thoughts of tonight's dreamless sleep.
My head is empty,
My toes are warm.
I am safe from harm.
Remember me as you fall to sleep.
Fill your pockets with the dust and the memory,
That rises from the shoes on my feet.
Though we may meet again.
Don't be afraid.
Every time I ever cried for fear,
Was just a mistake that I made.
Wash yourself in your tears,
And build your church
On the strength of your fears.
Listen to me,
Don't let go,
Don't let this desperate moonlight leave me,
With your empty pillow,
Promise me
The sun will rise again.
Embracing thoughts of tonight's dreamless sleep.
My head is empty,
My toes are warm.

one of the saddest songs i've ever heard, but beautiful. does anyone else think its about suicide
this is my favorite song off spiderland. it definitely implies death: "dust and the memories...from the shoes on my feet." implying that he intends turning into ashes and never return, hence the memories. also, the same point that cherub rock made about leaving this life, but possibly meeting in an afterlife.
however, i don't want to believe that the song is about suicide since he obviously has a strong love and sees himself as a protector to the girl. his lyrics imply that she loves him deeply. i don't understand why he would want to break that bond by killing himself.
i think it's more. 'what's the point in even existing if i can't exist with you...' kind of thing. so, it's basically suicidal. in the nihilistic form of it i guess. even if that would count as nihilistic. i'm just so in love with his voice. and the very first verse. the 'fill your pockets with the dust of the memories that rises from the shoes on my feet'. ahhh, the amounts of love.
It really is a beautiful song.
Such a sad song. I think the lyric is "wash yourself in your tears, and build your church on the strength of your fears" and not "faith" though.
I'm pretty sure the word is "faith", but it could be fears.

He definitely says "faith", my friend. In context, building a church on the strength of one's fear wouldn't make any sense.

this is a beatifully poetic song, i love the guitar line. stunning maybe you're right.. i'd never thought of it like that before but it makes sense. "i won't be back here, though we may meet again" -- i'm leaving this life but i may see you in the hereafter. "promise me the sun will rise again" -- promise me you'll get over my passing and have something else to live for
With the last verse it sounds like he overdosed on sleep medication.
Well, why do you guys think the song is called "washer"... any ideas? Maybe it just has to do with the "wash yourself in your tears" line... like he's calling the girl the "washer".
this is one of those songs i just want to melt into, and live with. ya.
I know what you mean, deadpilot. I get that with a lot of music. I like the line 'my toes are warm', reminds me of 'cold feet' but really says that he's actually going to do himself in. I agree with charrbin actually, It does seem like he's taking sleeping pills. I do really love this son, but I'm not quite so sure about the guys voice. It seems a little....off..
