Angel Of The Morning Lyrics

Chip Taylor

There'll be no strings to bind your hands
Not if my love can't bind your heart
And there's no need to take a stand
For it was I who chose to start

There is no need to take me home
I'm old enough to face the dawn
Just call me angel of the morning
Just touch my cheek before you leave me baby

Just call me angel of the morning
Slowly slowly turn away from me
Well maybe the sun's light will be dim
but it won't matter anyhow

If morning echo says we've sinned
Well, it was what I wanted now.
And if we're the victims of the night
I promise you I won't be blinded by light

Just call me angel
Touch my cheek before you leave me baby.
Just call me angel of the morning morning
Just touch my cheek before you leave me baby

Just call me angel of the morning (baby
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby)
Just call me angel of the morning
Slowly slowly turn away from me from me
From me

I love this song, it puts some poetry into such a sleazy and meaningless occurrence - the one night stand - The woman in the song talks about how she is 'old enough to face the dawn' and expects no show of false chivalry from the previous nights partner 'there is no need to take me home', but there is some desperation in her voice when she sings the chorus "Just call me angel of the morning Just touch my cheek before you leave me baby Just call me angel of the morning Slowly slowly turn away from me"

the woman speaks of her need for some small show of tenderness "just touch my cheek before you leave me', and her need for some dignity and respect to be shown to her when the time comes to part ways.

i am surprised nobody has commented on this song, i think that its lovely and the lyrics are beautifully crafted, omitting the cliched 'baby' parts!

I think you really nailed it, Dotdotdot (don't know if you'll ever read this since it's been some time since you posted).. There's more of a discussion under the Marilee Rush version, which is the one I grew up listening to.

Yes, the song gives a real poetic dignity to a one night stand, but I've always found the near-religious references are what takes it to a new level. Along with her loneliness, the singer appears to feel punishment for her actions is a distinct possibility. "If morning's echo says we've sinned, well it was what I wanted now," suggests a price to be paid for breaking the rules. "I'm old enough to face the dawn" is a beautiful way of saying, "if there's punishment, I'll accept it."

All in all, the song makes the ordinary extraordinary.
