Heartspark Dollarsign Lyrics
Time stops when the whispers blare
The voices drop hard,
but the eyes still stare
The world resolves into a
death's head grin
Because I walk with pride
with a black girlfriend
My mom said not to bring her around
Cause she's black
My Family would put her down
I'll break the white-trash
ties that bind
Trade a love so pure for
a hate so blind
She said- she said
Forget the fact that I don't
look like you
She said- she said
You're possessed with a power
Bigger than the pain
Time stops when we lie so close
In my room where we share
What no one knows
From the day that we start
Until the day that we end
I know I know I know now
We will never find a place
Where we could just fit in
Me and my black girlfriend
She said- she said
Fend for yourself- you're alone
She said- she said
You are possessed with a power
Bigger than the pain
A power bigger than the pain
Heartspark Dollarsign
The voices drop hard,
but the eyes still stare
The world resolves into a
death's head grin
Because I walk with pride
with a black girlfriend
My mom said not to bring her around
Cause she's black
My Family would put her down
I'll break the white-trash
ties that bind
Trade a love so pure for
a hate so blind
Forget the fact that I don't
look like you
She said- she said
You're possessed with a power
Bigger than the pain
In my room where we share
What no one knows
Until the day that we end
I know I know I know now
We will never find a place
Where we could just fit in
Fend for yourself- you're alone
She said- she said
You are possessed with a power
Bigger than the pain

That part just makes me feele better whenever there're some down times.
Anyone here other than me hear the original Colorfinger version? I liked it better.

wow. everclear is so deep. i love this song. but does anyone know what a Heartspark Dollarsign actually is?
This song brings back such powerful memories for me. Growing up in essentially an all black neighborhood in the 60’s, all my first crushes were on girls whose skin color was much different from my own. Back then, the pressure applied from peers, family and others towards a mixed race couple usually was too much to maintain the relationship and this idea is captured almost perfectly in the song lyrics. This song brings a mist to my eyes every time I hear and when it comes on, I just have to stop what I am doing and listen. Thanks Everclear!
We have come a long way since 60's but there is still a long, long way to go.
I think at its core the song isn't even about race, its about the inevitable feeling in youthful love that only each other understand you fully. It's about being lost and not caring what the world thinks or knowing that the only real place you have to be understood is with that person. Also about wanting to ignore real hardships that are hard to ignore because you love someone but knowing deep down eventually they will take their toll whether you as a couple survive them or sepperate.
Tho obviously the universal appeal of the song in everyone feeling like they don't fit in and being lost in love is wrapped in the more personal story of interracial love and a family that doesn't understand i think mostly the underlying meaning affects most people because to be honest most people I know haven't been in that exact situation and lost everything for someone they knew they likely still wouldn't have forever. But i think even people who haven't get the underneath story of "us against the world" which is what makes me love this song so much
