is this an original? because i'm sure i've heard of some old band/singer doing something with the same name. and was it used on a 'zaubertroll' (troll) comercial in germany?
The Hall of the Mountain King is a classical piece from an unknown composer. It is similar in tone ans since it is the same name it seems to a reference and inspiration for this song/album. It also reminds of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor
I'm almost certain it's an original. It was basically Savatage's flagship song for years on end.
...And yeah looking at my liner notes it was written by Jon Oliva and Criss Oliva, the band's frontmen. Genuine, original Savatage all the way (except the Prelude to Madness intro, obviously)
