The song is about a struggling relationship, with one part of the couple wanting to have his "old" partner back ("show me the angel I saw in your eyes"), which seems to be quite cruel at the time the story takes place ("I never thought you could be so cruel") It appears, that with one small step everything will be perfect and they shall be together forever ("fill my last desire and the next stop's paradise") One of them may have cheated on the other one, because of the phrase "why did you throw my heart away", but this may also describe any other situation in which not much if any love was involved.
