Lives opened and trashed
Look, ma, watch me crash
No time to question
Why'd nothing last
Grasp and hold on
Hold tight and fast
Soon be over
And I will relent
Let the ocean swell, dissolve 'way my past
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't even know I've left
Under your tongue
I'm like a tab
I will give you what
You're not s'posed to have
Under my breath
I swear by sin
For better or for worse
A best we begin
Let the sun climb, oh, burn 'way my mask
Three days, and maybe longer
Shed my skin at last
Shed, shed
Let the sun shine, burn 'way my mask
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't ever find me here
Let the ocean dissolve 'way my past
Four days, and not much longer
Let my spirit pass
This is, this is
This is, this is
This is, this is
My
Last exit
Look, ma, watch me crash
No time to question
Why'd nothing last
Grasp and hold on
Hold tight and fast
Soon be over
And I will relent
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't even know I've left
I'm like a tab
I will give you what
You're not s'posed to have
Under my breath
I swear by sin
For better or for worse

Three days, and maybe longer
Shed my skin at last
Shed, shed
Three days, and maybe longer
Won't ever find me here
Four days, and not much longer
This is, this is
This is, this is
This is, this is
My
Last exit

last exit = death
GREATEST SONG EVER MADE
I can't believe that no one has made the connection between this song and Kurt Cobain. Think about it, Kurt was dead for THREE DAYS before his body was discovered. Now I know that this song was written before He died but don't you think it is possible he changed some of the lyrics after Kurt killed himself? Seriously think about it, the whole song seems to represent confusion and stress, Kurt was obviously a very confused and stressed out person. This is held up through out the song, reaching a pitch at the very end where everything quickly ends at Eddie almost whispering the words "Last Exit". This song burns out so quickly, it has the abrupt end that seems to be almost as sudden as suicide.
Any thoughts?
the only reason this song isnt about kurts suicide is because he was murdered, so it couldnt be about his suicide because it never happened
This song is about how fame open lives and ruins them by turning them into marketing. Fame can be fleeting & after a little time, no one will remember your existence. During the song, lots of metaphores lead to the understanding of running away and letting natural things destroy what's left of the person, just like the sun and the oceans (references vocalist Eddie Vedders surf passion). Closing the song, Eddie insists that his existence remains now under a strong decision of being depersonalized because, out of desperation, this is his last exit for survival.
As in many songs of the band, water is a metaphor. In Last Exit it's “Let the ocean swell, dissolve 'way my past”. There are references to death & suicide in the lyrics. The line "Three days, and maybe longer. Won't ever find me here" seemingly could be a reference to Kurt Cobain who was found three days after his death in his small garden house. Because he was diagnosed with a drugs overdose, the working of drugs might be the "let the ocean swell". What I think is very intriguing is the reference to Charon from Greek mythology. The line “Under your tongue, I'm like a tab, I will give you what you're not supposed to have” could indicate that people normally condemn suicide, but the singer (Eddie Vedder) won't (and gives the coin required to enter afterlife). In the song Vedder shows hurry & says he will let the ocean dissolve way his past. After a little time, no one will remember his existence. The lyrics include lots of metaphors about running away & allowing whatever may come destroy what's left of the person. This album's pretty grim, but I think he means music. A great song to listen to if you're waiting for something..
Perhaps this song is about moving forward and not living in the past anymore and not dwelling on memories that you cannot change.
I think its about dying. "Shed my skin at last" "let my spirit pass" I suppose its his way dealing with death.
