Song For Eric Lyrics

I wait all day for my sailor and sometimes he comes

See you over hill and dale
Riding on the wind I see
You know me, you know me like the nightingale
"Oh fair maiden I see you standing there"
Will you hold me for just a fair time
The tune is playing in the fair night
I see you in my dreams
Fair boy your eyes haunt me

Cover art for Song For Eric lyrics by Tori Amos

This song sounds exactly like Norwegian folk music.

These lyrics take me back to old tales of the fishermens women on the Norwegian coast, waiting day and night for their husbands to come home from sea, never knowing if they ever would return. They would stay up all night worrying.

"You know me like the nightingale": The nightingale's songs have been shaped by their environment, just as the rap musician of New York delivers a different "tune" to the yodeller in the Norwegian mountains. The nightingale holds up to 300 different love songs in his repertoire. Although it also sings during the day, the nightingale is unusual in singing late in the evening; its song is particularly noticeable at that time because few other birds are singing.
