i think this song is a very good showcase of bob's use of diction, consonance, and alliteration. he has such a gift for that. this song is very emotional, almost desperate in the attempt to keep a partner when you know the relationship is over/doomed, or realising that a crush will never become a relationship. http://www.angelfire.com/indie/braid
I think this song is about a guy who plays girls by pretending to be one of the nice guys. I can almost hear a sarcastic tone to Bob's voice when he says "let's hear a cheer/jeer for the 'nice guys.'" And when he speaks of "our guile," I think he means a guy's deceitful ability to play the good guy and get the girl. And obviously the line "if I lead you along then you read me wrong" is like telling the girl, "hey, you knew what the deal was this whole time, I just wanted to get some, sorry not sorry." And for the rest of the song, I have no idea haha.
