One By One Lyrics

Here am I
Yet another goodbye!
He says, Adios says, Adios
And do you know why
She won't break down and cry?
She says, Adios says, Adios goodbye.

It's no lie
She is yearning to fly.
She says, Adios says, Adios
And now you know why
He's a reason to sigh.
She says, Adios says, Adios goodbye.

My, oh my!
She was aiming too high.
He says, Adios says, Adios
And now you know why
There's no moon in her sky.
He says, Adios says, Adios goodbye.
He says, Adios says, Adios goodbye.

No goodbyes
For love brightens their eyes.
Don't say, Adios say, Adios
And do you know why
There's a love that won't die?
Don't say, Adios say, Adios goodbye.

Don't say, Adios say, Adios goodbye.
Don't say, Adios say, Adios goodbye.

My favourite part of this is when she sings, "One by one my leaves fall, One by one my tales are told," which seems to have been omitted here. I don't think it's a song with a really deep meaning, but I like that line because it evokes a lot of things... like the passage of time... aging... experiences we'll never have again... story-telling... I really just like the image of trees representing people.

It seems to me to be about a girl who has had a lot of lovers, and each one of them left her and said goodbye. She's yearning for someone to love who will love her back, but she has such high expactations, and with each lover who's left her because of her high expectations, a little part of her seems to die, like the leaves falling off a tree. But despite of it all, she's not breaking down and crying, but continuing on. The line "one by one my tales are told" might be referring to the fact that, in the song, it's almost like a story. The first three stanzas are about different lovers who left her. The forth one is about a lover who finally stayed with her.

I think this song is about a girls transition of her love-life.

The singer's age is never given, but it could be assumed that she is at the very least 18 during the first stanza. She is having yet another breakup with an unsuccessful relationship. The relationship was unhealthy and counter-productive and she is so relieved to be free from it that she feels no remorse ending it.

Some time later, the singer is in another relationship. Although the relationship seems to be particularly healthy, the singer seems dissatisfied and is craving for someone who is not who she is currently with. She was yearning to fly, so to speak. Because of her superficial nature, she dumps him which causes heartbreak for him.

Some time later still, our superficial singer is at yet another relationship, perhaps with the man of her dreams. It is interesting to point out that this is the only stanza that has "he says" adios without she saying adios. This implies that, perhaps for the first time ever, she has been rejected by him.

Time passes by yet again and our heroine is perhaps now too old to worry about such trivial things as puppy love. She is certainly hopeful, however she is no longer desperate and determines that she will no longer say goodbye to anyone.

Or it's about a relationship where she actually literally dies. Whichever makes more sense to you. lol

@itsbeckybitch I like this interpretation a lot. I was a bit confused by the last stanza. thanks for catching that only HE says it that time.

I do believe that it ends with the singer being determined to try and work through stuff in the future.

I've always thought this song was about death.

The whole 'she was aiming too high' and 'a love that won't die' lines just seem to be saying that.

Also the repetition of 'adios, adios, goodbye'

I love this song. It's kind of sad, but I like it anyway. It's calming, and I like to listen to it and make up stories in my head, mostly because I'm writing a book, and any song can help me think of my book or other books I'm going to write. In any case, calming song, I like it.

I think it's a song designed to be pretty sounding. It's succeeded in that. I'm pretty sure there's not much for hidden meaning here.
