Goodnight Moon Lyrics

There's a nail in the door
And there's glass on the lawn
Tacks on the floor
And the TV is on
And I always sleep with my guns when you're gone

There's a blade by the bed
And a phone in my hand
A dog on the floor
And some cash on the nightstand
When I'm all alone the dreaming stops
And I just can't stand --- this line should read "And I just count sand"

What should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out
And maybe and then the wind just starts to moan
Outside the door he followed me home

So goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say goodnight moon

There's a shark in the pool
And a witch in the tree
A crazy old neighbor and he's been watching me
And there's footsteps loud and strong coming down the hall
Something's under the bed
Now it's out in the hedge
There's a big black crow sitting on my window ledge
And I hear something scratching through the wall

What should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out
And maybe and then the wind just starts to moan
Outside the door he followed me home
So goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say goodnight moon

To me, this song has always made me think of someone alone at home with incredible fear of the dark and high paranoia letting their imagination run wild. This song sent shivers up my spine the first time I heard it.

Great song. Sexy voice&sexy, sleepy atmosphere. I think that the girl is, kinda, scared, but, on the other hand, there's something funny (can't find the right word) in the elements such as the witch, or the thing that moves from under the bed to the hedge. Surreal&dreamlike.

she starts out be telling how she has done everything to feel safe, when alone. the the choir: "What should I do I'm just a little baby". She has realised that she needs a man to protect her. So essential she speaks to the mans need and will to protect a vulnerable being .)

Honestly, I always thought she said "When I'm all alone the dreaming stops, and I just count sand." Which makes more sense... sounds like she's saying that, too.

Now that you mention it, it does sound that way, and it would make sense. Actually either one works, so I say use what you like.

i don't know what it means personally to the artist, but to me its the kinda song you would find on one of those 1940's black and white thriller movies. with the girl running and screaming from the killer. for some reason that's the image i got.

i had a few ideas on how the song could be viewed.

  1. someone is 'stalking' her home. and because her love isn't home she doesn't feel safe.
  2. she's afraid of the dark. "what if the lights fo out....." "goodnight moon" - which could also refer to death.

then again i could be completely off track.

i don't know what i believe this song is about but i completely love it.

hmm i think its about a woman who is all alone at night, and she hears all these things outside and theres a full moon out. she tries to stay awake because theres noone there to protect her.

lol! Don't take this song literally. This girl is just amusing herself. It's cute but also so sexy as weezergirl said.

I agree with wildberry. I could be completely wrong, but it reminds me of and old hitchcock-type film, where the girl is all alone in her apartment, and someone is following her, but she doesn't know who, so she's walking around wide-eyed, and cautious hoping that the light of the moon might protect her.

Wildberry was absolutely right. This is one of my favorite songs from Kill Bill 2. They play it as she's driving in a convertable in an old hollywood black and white scene. Genius.
