Stay Lyrics

if this world is wearing thin
and you're thinking of escape
i'll go anywhere with you
i'll do anything it takes [just wrap me up in chains]
but if you try to go alone
don't think i'll understand

stay with me, stay with me.

in the silence of your room
in the darkness of your schemes [ ... dreams]
there among the souvenirs [you must only think of me]
and the useless memories [there can be no in between]
when your pride is on the floor
i'll make you beg for more

stay with me, stay with me.

you'd better hope and pray
that you'll be safe [ that you make it safe]
in your own world [back to your own world]
you'd better hope and pray
that you're gonna awake [that you wake one day]
back in your own world [in your own world]
[cause when you sleep at night they don't hear your cries]
[in your own world]
[only time will tell if you can break the spell]
[back in your own world]

stay with me, stay with me.

It's about an attempted suicide i think.. i'm sure i read somewhere it was..

'if this world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape' sounds like a suicidal person

'but if you try to go alone don't think i'll understand' sounds a bit like pleading with someone to talk about their situation

I think whoever said it was about suicide may have hit the nail on the head. Certainly, it has elements of obsession it it - but it certainly has elements of a woman singing to a lover who is depressed and contemplating suicide. "Don't think I'll understand" in particular, is something I know I've had to say to friends or girlfriends who have considered suicide.

"if this world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape i'll go anywhere with you i'll do anything it takes [just wrap me up in chains] but if you try to go alone don't think i'll understand"

This really sounds like a suicide song to me. My girlfriend has told me that if I ever decide to go, she wants to come with me. I didn't know what to say; death is such a personal thing and I don't know that I'd want her involved, but she'd be pretty upset if I just left her here. That's how this song relates to me, despite the fact that I first heard it when it was a MuchMusic regular about 10 years before I met her.

"you'd better hope and pray that you'll be safe [that you make it safe] in your own world [back to your own world] . . ."

I think this part is about the unknown aspect of death. Are you actually going to be in a better position after death? Will death "break the spell", and will anybody be there to hear your cries in the afterlife?

Well I've definitely always thought this song was about suicide. Not just that, however - but when Siobhan Fahey takes on the "Death" pers onification, as we all mostly agree on, she speaks about the Afterlife. I find her lyrics the most interesting of the song - she describes the afterlife (back in your own world) as a place less forgiving than life itself, reinforcing the general song's statement: Is this really a good idea?

Such an emotive song. Marcella Detroit is such an awesome singer, I can't believe she was the "back up singer" of this group! Oh, and just as a trivia note.. the filmclip setting for this song, was based on a terrible 1950s sci-fi film about a planet of cat women. lol. P:

Bravo Lici -applauds-

I always though of this song as narrating an intensely obsessive love,

"I'll go anywhere with you" and "Stay with me"

The narrator is describing her feelings to the person she's obsessed/ in love with, and is desperate to gain the upper hand. Could be kinda kinky with the line about the chains and "I'll make you beg for more" too =P All in all, amazing song.

I agree. I think the song is about death is general. It could apply to suicide the most, but I think mainly it's about the singer pleading with their dying lover to stay with them. Even if they don't actually have a choice in death, they are still pleading for them not to go.

I think it is a song about deep obsessive love and wanting her man to choose a life with her rather then suicide. Begging him not to do anything without her. It's written and sung powerfully from two prospectives of just pure emotional desperation and jealous anger, A wanting for him to show her that same obsessive love and commitment, but his depression is stopping him from ever doing so.

I think the song is about an abusive relationship. Person begs you to stay, and you do, but on their abusive terms.

I think that this song is about death and about someone asking someone not to leave them.

if this world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape i'll go anywhere with you i'll do anything it takes [just wrap me up in chains]

I think that its saying that if you are going to die take me with you

you'd better hope and pray that you'll be safe [ that you make it safe] in your own world [back to your own world] you'd better hope and pray that you're gonna awake [that you wake one day] back in your own world [in your own world] [cause when you sleep at night they don't hear your cries] [in your own world] [only time will tell if you can break the spell] [back in your own world]

Its saying that you better pray that they are going to come back to 'this world' which is the land of the living. Its saying that you bettter wake up in this world rather than the world of the dead.

I also think this because in the music video its her with a person whos on a bed with all this medical stuff around them.

Personally I feel that this song is about death; not so much suicide but begging someone who's terminally ill to keep fighting.

if this world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape i'll go anywhere with you

If you're going to give up i'll follow you into the afterlife; together in death.

i'll do anything it takes [just wrap me up in chains]

take me with you; even if it's unwillingly.

but if you try to go alone don't think i'll understand

Explaining how hysterical she'll get in the grieving process; not understanding how to live with out him.

In the silence of your room in the darkness of your schemes [ ... dreams] there among the souvenirs [you must only think of me] and the useless memories [there can be no in between]

Use me as your guiding light back to this life.

when your pride is on the floor i'll make you beg for more

When you're at your limits, I'm going to push you harder.

you'd better hope and pray that you'll be safe [ that you make it safe] in your own world [back to your own world] you'd better hope and pray that you're gonna awake [that you wake one day] back in your own world [in your own world] [cause when you sleep at night they don't hear your cries] [in your own world] [only time will tell if you can break the spell] [back in your own world]

This is my favourite part of the video and song! I think this piece is directed at both the man and the grieving woman; To him: pray that you'll wake up and only time will tell if he actually will. To Her: Pray that you'll be able to carry on afterwards and get over this possible loss. No one will hear your crying when you're alone and only time will tell if you'll be able to carry on.

The video overall explains a lot; in some cultures the Moon is the Mother of all life on Earth. She is associated with the Spiral of Life - birth, death, and rebirth. She grants our wishes. She guides our dreams. This coupled with the shooting star is symbolic of her wishes. No doubt that death enters and it's a fight between life & death; her all consuming love triumphing.

This is what I got from the song. This will always be one of my favourite songs :D

Actually...this interpretation hits the nail on the head. Sorry guys/gals...but this is what it's about.

I was alive and thriving in my teens (I think) when this song came out. Now I face quite a few health problems and am terrified that I will leave the love in my life to grieve.

I'm sorry for you. That is a great song.

Don't be sorry. That is life...you get what you can before it gets taken away.

The worst part about it is that I love her so much. T___T
