Stewball Lyrics
Oh, Stewball was a racehorse, and I wish he were mine
He never drank water, he always drank wine
His bridle was silver, his mane it was gold
And the worth of his saddle has never been told
Oh, the fairgrounds were crowded, and Stewball was there
But the betting was heavy on the bay and the mare
And away up yonder, ahead of them all
Came a-prancing and a-dancing my noble Stewball
I bet on the grey mare, I bet on the bay
If I'd have bet on ol' Stewball, I'd be a free man today
Oh, the hoot owl, she hollers, and the turtle dove moans
I'm a poor boy in trouble, I'm a long way from home
Oh, Stewball was a racehorse, and I wish he were mine
He never drank water, he always drank wine
He never drank water, he always drank wine
And the worth of his saddle has never been told
But the betting was heavy on the bay and the mare
Came a-prancing and a-dancing my noble Stewball
If I'd have bet on ol' Stewball, I'd be a free man today
I'm a poor boy in trouble, I'm a long way from home
He never drank water, he always drank wine

So moving. They sing it as a sing along--still moving and touching. Just a gambler song, but touched the eternal verities. Oh but it does. They guys are great.
I love this song. I realized that I could create an entire soundtrack for a movie out of Peter Paul and Mary songs because their folk style is so moving. Stewball reminds me of the kind of song that should be in The Royal Tenanbaums.
Stewball was actually a racehorse in the 1800s. They did not originate the song. It\'s an old folk song that resurfaced in the 30s and then PPM made their amazing version in the 60s.\n\nIt\'s about the underdog winning and being immortalized (his silver bridle and gold mane). Was originally Skewball I think.
