Fire Maple Song Lyrics
Turn away from the pain you don't want
Turnin' down to avoid them when they call
Strange words I heard a long, long time ago
I wish I could go back to a summertime
I knew more than twenty years ago
Lay between the sheets
Lie underneath the maple tree
Now I can't smile
Lyin' down in the grass with the wind around us as we smile and talk
Listen to your grandma sing those country songs
She'd tell us how the maple turns to fire every four years
We'd lay in the grass all summer just to watch the autumn come around
I can't smile
Now I live alone
And you're so far away
Yeah, I call you every year
Just around the holidays
I still see you in the night
Lyin' above me in the grass
I can't smile
Turn away from the pain you don't want
Turnin' down to avoid them when they call
I can't believe this letter that says you died
I think I'm gonna go back the the house in North Carolina
And lay in the back yard
Get drunk and let the leaves just bury me, bury me
I can't smile
I don't know what's happened to me
I can't smile
Turnin' down to avoid them when they call
Strange words I heard a long, long time ago
I wish I could go back to a summertime
I knew more than twenty years ago
Lay between the sheets
Lie underneath the maple tree
Now I can't smile
Lyin' down in the grass with the wind around us as we smile and talk

Art lost both his brother (heroin overdose) and his girlfriend (suicide) when he was an adolescent. I think this is what the song is about. How tragic events in life can stay in the back of our heads and linger even years down the road. An absolute brilliant song. Some of the rawest, most heartfelt lyrics and vocals I've heard in a song.
This is one of the best Everclear songs ever written. It's really a shame that hardly anyone owns this album or comments on this song. Go download it from Kazaa if you haven't heard it. You'll thank me later.
I just got this line "Listen to your grandma sing those country songs She'd tell us how the maple turns to fire every four years We'd lay in the grass all summer just to watch the autumn"
I think it's awesome to hear Art sound like this. Any more songs like it?
A freind of mine bought me a London import of a single and this song was the "B" side. It's about longing for the better days gone by that can never be reclaimed. It's also about how the longer we live, the more pain we have to cary around with us.
The song doesn't need an interpretation as the lyrics are very moving w/o one.
I take it the one who died was a girl from his pre-teen years...his puppy love. They had a very memorable summer together. Over time they drifted apart and kept in touch rarely.
All those memories of that summer come back to him as he reads a letter telling him that this girl had died....dwelling up all sorts of emotions.
Now those thoughts that once brought him happiness, will only hurt now, and no longer bring a smile as they once did.
This is an amazing song, it's a shame that not many people know about it. I think its one of the best songs I've ever heard.
Seems to be about a guy who grew up with a girl and fell in love, only to separate with her over time and eventually find out that she has died. And he wants to go back to that time... it's a great song.
great damn song.. this is the only everclear album i dont own
Actually this song is about a house that Art either lived in or visited in Asheville, NC. That's all I know.
actually this song is about a place art lived in or visited in Asheville, NC when he was a boy, that's all I know
this has been 1 of the more difficult songs for me to interpreate. i think its about the passing of time and thinking of a former lover. he wants to go back to her but he knows theres not hope for that
