honestly not a big fan of (many) country songs, but THIS song is by far one of the greatest (country/pop) songs ever written. It reminds me of when I was a kid and me and my wife were just going out. Man, breakups are hard. We eventually got married, but being out without your woman missing her is the most difficult thing a man can try to pretend not to be doing. And somehow, to me anyway, the moon brings a sort of lonesome comfort when you're hurtin'. Beautiful lyrics. I know, sounds gay but hey, I'm a musician. I feel this shit.
It's not referring to the real moon, it's referring to a neon moon, which just further paints the picture of how desolate he is at that moment, that his only comfort is from something so artificial and sad. He has nothing. All he has is some neon sign in a bar to give him solace. It just makes the song all the more painful.

i think "neon moon" reffers to a sign in the bar maybe... cause he says he's in a bar...
If the neon moon is a bar sign, your broken dreams may be represented by cigarette smoke in the air. Which would drift between the blubs of the sign.
A song about a guy feeling down in the dumps in a bar. The neon light being the neon lights in the bars I'm guessing. You know, beer signs, etc.

Neon moon is a song about a bar in Ruston LA home of Louisiana Tech University the bar which has been shut down for 4 years now was called Stowes kix went to louisiana tech and played football there and would often go to this bar with his classmates and friends neon moon refers to the "moon" which sometimes when you walk out of the bar is right in front of you bright and almost neon looking the bar is right on the other side of the rail road tracks and they always had a table for 2 way in the back. i
