Dead Heaven Lyrics
thought i was asleep, lost to dreams
i was dying in a big machine
didn't think the voice that called me could be real
thought i woke up, lost my faith
i was staring at the face of rage
didn't think i'd see the demon in 'his' heart
thought i saw blood turn to wine
a vision from the angel wars
didn't think i'd find the savior in the dark
thought i saw a light tear the storm
showing me the way to god
didn't know that heaven died and went to hell
blessed is dead heaven
blessed are shadows and pain
blessed is dead heaven
blessed is death in 'his' name
thought i saw rain, black and cold
falling on a child's grave
thought i saw an angel laugh and piss on it
thought i saw a dance, strange and cruel
swaying to the screams of men
thought i saw the lord's disciples laugh at that
thought i saw love sacrificed
mary under three wise men
thought i saw the virgin look at me and cry
thought i saw a cross and jesus dead
burning in the midnight sky
thought i saw god dancing in the flames
glory is dead heaven
glory is shadows and pain
glory is dead heaven
glory is death in 'his' name
'do you confess?'
'cleanse your sin.'
'do you believe in the word of god?'
welcome to dead heaven
welcome to shadows and pain
welcome to dead heaven
welcome to death in 'his' name
welcome to dead heaven
welcome to shadows and pain
welcome to dead heaven
welcome to death in 'his' name

I... love this song...
Coming from the CD 'Exile', itself something of a concept album, this song supposedly shows some of the revelations the 'lead character' of the Exile story sees in his visions. Visions that reveal to him the Ultimate Lie of God. Heaven and Hell are the same place, God and The Devil the same person. He sees angels urinating on the graves of children, 'God' rejoicing in the pain and suffering of human beings, the Virgin Mary raped by the Three Wise Men, etc.
I was struck by the number of previous songs and lyrics used throughout this piece. It was like a walk throught Gary Numan history.
I really like Exile as an album. At times, the darkness of it all can be a bit difficult to navigate through, particularly since I don't believe I've ever felt as disconnected from the Universe as Mr. Numan (I do still hold my religious beliefs), but there is a real, raw artistry Numan has that few others do. He is at times as angry as KMFDM or similar bands/artists, but he expresses it differently (sometimes, that's better).

"Thought I was asleep, lost to dreams": Numan writes a lot of songs, especially on "Sacrifice" but even on earlier albums like "Outland", about real dangers coming to him in dreams. A good example would be "Bleed" on the album "Sacrifice". Also a similar theme in the line "Thought I woke up, lost my faith/I was staring at the face of rage" as Numan has a number of songs that deal with waking up from a dream and have the malevolent force from his dream follow him into the real world....

"I was dying in a big machine": A reference perhaps to songs like "My Dying Machine", "My Centurian", etc. Songs about being trapped in a machine and being helpless to to anything about it.
The rest of the references are more the choices of single words in the lyrics that echo some of Gary's common themes: The Dark, The Angel Wars, Sacrifice, etc.
