By Chris' own explanation, this is a song about a conscientious objector attempting to escape with his lover rather than face being drafted and made to fight. The story continues in a happy future in the song 'Say Goodbye to it All' on 1986's Intro the Light album.

its WW2 Europe themed, & its about 2 people being in love who are from opposing countries who are about to go to war & one is about to go off to war, & its simple a love love about to people on 2 different sides of the border & their love expresses no borders or borderlines
Sad song...Always reminds me of soldiers going to war and regretting the choice between duty and love.
Had it been a love song , people would have written much about it .This song is just great .I reminds me of soldies going to the war .Well, and how they always face such kind of quandry and they have to take one side (of course the other willl loose ) . Well, the way it is sung is just great .I am a intense floyd fan ... still there are some other's number that I like ... just love the voice of Chris and in fact I love the ups and downs in this song ... a beautiful emotional song ... really takes the cake .
This song always gets a fantastic reception when Chris plays live, usually with rapturous applause at the line ‘..wisdom in a war’. I have seen Chris many times and it is always on the set.
I cried when I first heard this song, at a Chris de Burgh concert in Belfast way back in 2000. So sad.
