The First Day of Spring Lyrics

My friend.
Don't just sit there and ruminate
With your navel to contemplate
Oh it's a beautiful day outside
Time's passing you by...

Come on out, yeah
Don't just sit there catatonic
When I'm feeling supersonic
The west wind is sweeping by
The sun's full in the sky

And there's no way of knowing
No way to know, know how long it will last.
There's no way of knowing
No way to know, know how long it will last.

Come on out.
Don't just site there and decompose
Go throw on some summer clothes
I would enjoy your company
But please hurry...

Cause there's no way of knowing
No way to know, know how long it will last.
There's no way of knowing
No way to know, know how long it will last.

My friend.
It's time that you began again
You can leave it all behind.

im not exactly sure if this song even has a deeper meaning, i think its just about enjoying your time while your alive, the sunshine, girls in haltertops and whatnot, and not sitting inside on the computer writing paragraphs about what you think about songs....SO GET THE HELL OUTSIDE WHILE ITS STILL SUN SHINY!

I know the writer of the song may have had different meaning when he wrote this, but everyone may have a different interpretation. To me, this song sounds like telling someone to leave all thoughts and reminders of a past relationship and start over. Spring is often metaphored as a starting over/new period for many people or cleaning out clutter. I guess it's the last 3 lines that give the rest of the song a twist and can think of it as a friend motivating a friend caught up on relationship:

My friend. It's time that you began again You can leave it all behind.

We just celebrated the first day of spring and I kicked it off with this song. A very cool oldie with the theme of letting go and moving on. I love the happy sound of it, so relaxing.

Its about depression and the conversation of the friendly mind encouraging one to get out of the depression and grieve and the other part feeling held back and having a hard time to move forward . Theres a comfort in the grief and person holding onto the sadness because letting go and stepping into the sunshine means letting go and thats painful. Same as the temporariness of spring and the sun and not knowing how long it will last feels ominous but also the person is being called out to get living also, be present and enjoy the sun while they can. The no way of knowing is beautiful yet ominous. The inevitability of death, temporary momentary happiness. and the beauty of life its phases, relationships… it almost feels easier to stay inside than go through the grief of losing again or facing the unkown.
