Gettin' in Tune Lyrics
With the chords I'm playing
I can't pretend there's any meaning here
Or in the things I'm saying
Right in tune
I'm in tune
And I'm gonna tune
Right in on you (x 3)
"Do you come here often?"
But when I look in your eyes and see the harmonies
And the heartaches soften
Right in tune
I'm in tune
And I'm gonna tune
Right in on you (right in on you)
Right in on you (right in on you)
Right in on you
There's nothing more needs to be said
I'm just bangin' on my old piano
I'm getting in tune with the straight and narrow
(Getting in tune with the straight and narrow)
Getting in tune with the straight and narrow
(Getting in tune with the straight and narrow)
Yeah, I'm getting in tune with the straight and narrow
(Getting in tune with the straight and narrow)
With the way I'm feeling
There's a symphony that I hear in your heart
Sets my head a-reeling
Right in tune
I'm in tune
And I'm gonna tune
Right in on you (right in on you)
Right in on you (right in on you)
Right in on you
There's nothing more needs to be said
I'm just bangin' on my old piano
I'm getting in tune with the straight and narrow

I see this about someone who after many casual relationships and probably a few serious but failed relationships finally finding the person with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life.
@Derf important add about the serious but failed relationships as I do believe the "gettin' in tune to the straight and narrow" means, in addition to the obvious that he's choosing someone for the right/better reasons other than convenience or social constructs. Harmonizing with a divined relationship.

It's so hard to believe no one has commented on this great song. Beautiful piano chords (featuring Nicky Hopkins, a very famous session pianist, played with Jeff Beck, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page, The Who..) and great drums near the end of the song.
The lyrics are just about music, nothing complex. Unless I am being ignorant, but I doubt that. Just about rocking and rolling and singing and playing.
@AeroLed286 not that I disagree, it's absolutely about that, but 22 years after you made your comment I thought I'd add that it can also be about relationships or simply finding where you should be in life...in tune with yourself.

I always took it to mean being in harmony with your lover. Whatever it means, I like it.

the song definitely has a double meaning ... both of harmonising your music with a band, getting everybody in synch to work together...as well as a layer of meaning about relationships (more than love really) the compromise and harmonising of personalities

Good comments above. Adding..."Gettin' in tune to the straight and narrow" .. It is said that the path to God is "straight, and narrow". This song morphs into how, through music, and the groove, we find the straight, and narrow path, giving enough, but not too much, a balance, which when lived in all things in life, help one achieve the balance in experience needed to make spiritual progress. Yeah!

this song is good. i especially like the bass part at the beginning. ya the lyrics are just about music but they kinda talk about bands trying to be something they are not "I can't pretend there's any meaning hidden in the things I'm saying"
by the way i think that is an error in the lyrics

Given the the concept behind Townshend's Lifehouse project I tend to agree with Sunlover. I've always taken this song to be about harmonizing with a lover or friend.

this song is so awsum.. and piper at the gates... the lyrics ARE good u just didnt understand the message that pete townshend was tryin to make....

This song is about people changing themselves physically or their personality fpr both good and bad reasons.

this song is an homage to MUSIC, how can you NOT love and appreciate that?? I guess piper doesn't get it...which is ok because i didnt get it at first, but once I got it - nothing but LOVE for this song
