I woke up dead today
And what's worse, I didn't care
I just laid there and waited for the feeling to return
But the feeling never returned
It's a fear
And if I lay still enough
I can pretend that you're still here
And when the city's cloaked in black
The only color that attracts
The lonely people here
ask one and they'll tell you
What's the point of falling in love
When all it does is leave you cold?
And I don't want to do this anymore
I woke up all alone
It's the first day in a long, long time
That I couldn't imagine myself crying when I think of you
But I'm too tired to hurt anymore
And I know that it can't last forever
And in the darkness of my apartment
I found light there and it burns
But I came to welcome the pain
'Cause it's the only thing that makes you strong
And I miss you still but I guess I'll just move on

bands that sprawled out of park ave's ashes are all great: cursive, faint, bright eyes, desaprecidos, tilly and the wall, magic kiss. and others its hard to believe all that from 4 smalltown kids. and for a town like paris dont be so shallow just becuas conor is a good lyricist doenst mean you cant open your mind to others... just keep taht in mind

Tilly and The Wall are pretty deck, but park ave. can never exist again. Not with the same honest youthful love. I love it.

mcaringiscreepy, you've got some facts wrong. bright eyes, cursive, and the faint did not sprawl from park ave.'s ashes, they were pretty much in existance while park ave. was. and no one from cursive was in park ave. oh, and there were five members of the group.

Bright Eyes, Cursive and The Faint came from Commander Venus. Not Park Ave. Par Ave came after Commander Venus. Bright Eyes did not exist before Park Ave did, though. Park Ave was Conors 2. project.

My general understanding has been that Park Ave came before Commander Venus because Conor was it existed from 1993-1995, while as Commander Venus existed from 1995-1997. But, I could be wrong, you never know. And also, I believe that a town like paris meant that this song is about Conor, not that he wrote it. It's a well known fact that Conor and Neely were quite the couple back in the day, and many of Conors early songs are about Neely, or at least can be interpreted as being about Neely. Which makes sense, because, in my opinion, now that Conor has found Maria, and has moved on from Neely, his lyrics have taken a far less somber tone when concerning relationships. I dunno, I'm a fan of Early Bright Eyes/Commander Venus/Park Ave myself, so who knows?

Matt Shadows their lead singer says the song was written as per request from the developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Watching the initial trailers for the game & looking at production sketches reminded him of the 'S-Town' podcast & its main protagonist, John B. McLemore. Matt also comments specifically on the lyrics: "I decided that the lyrics would shadow McLemore's life." In 2012, antiquarian horologist John B. McLemore sent an email to the staff of the show 'This American Life' asking them to investigate an alleged murder in his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, a place McLemore claimed to despise. After a year of exchanging emails & several months of conversation with McLemore, producer Brian Reed traveled to Woodstock to investigate. Reed investigated the crime & eventually found that no such murder took place, though he struck up a friendship with the depressed but colorful character of McLemore. He recorded conversations with McLemore & other people in Woodstock. McLemore killed himself by drinking potassium cyanide on June 22, 2015 while the podcast was still in production. In the narrative of the podcast, this occurs at the end of the second episode; subsequent episodes deal with the fallout from McLemore's death while exploring more of McLemore's life & character.
