I love this song. It reminds me of things so personal. Like someone that you cared alot about (a past love) You think about that person all the time.... and how you want to tell them what you feel. The only excuse you have to really talk to that person is on their birthday when you simply wish them a happy birthday... but its really so much more. All of your feelings and emotions that you can't express in that simple birthday greeting. Regrets and questions, thoughts and feelings are all chopped down to 2 words. I think that's what this song is about. I love how he says "well, happy birthday anyway."
it seems like this band's lyrics have many different meanings...i have trouble understanding sometimes but i like them.
He's writing this song to a former lover. The relationship went bad, obviously. But, he still has feelings for her - so, happy birthday anyway.

Corrections: "...cry when winter's hands, stole you..." and "...nothing but a hole, you...". Anyways, I think this song is definitely related to maternity and birth (swallowed out into the light, didn't want to cut the cord, etc..). I'm not exactly sure who's perspective it's sung from, but a lot of seems like it's sung by a mother to her child. The last four lines seem like the opposite, perhaps.
