My Friend Of Misery Lyrics
You just stood there screaming
Fearing no one was listening to you
They say the empty can rattles the most
The sound of your own voice must soothe you
Hearing only what you want to hear
And knowing only what you’ve heard
You
You’re smothered in tragedy
And you’re out to save the world
Misery
You insist that the weight of the world
Should be on your shoulders
Misery
There’s much more to life than what you see
My friend of misery
You still stood there screaming
No one caring about these words you tell
My friend, before your voice is gone
One man’s fun is another’s hell
These times are sent to try men’s souls
But something’s wrong with all you see
You
You’ll take it on all yourself
Remember, misery loves company
Misery
You insist that the weight of the world
Should be on your shoulders
Misery
There’s much more to life than what you see
My friend of misery
You just stood there screaming
My friend of misery
Fearing no one was listening to you
They say the empty can rattles the most
The sound of your own voice must soothe you
Hearing only what you want to hear
And knowing only what you’ve heard
You’re smothered in tragedy
And you’re out to save the world
You insist that the weight of the world
Should be on your shoulders
There’s much more to life than what you see
My friend of misery

An outsider view of someone wandering in self-pity and having a very pessimistic view of the rest of the world.
I can't believe no one has commented on this song. This is a wonderful song. I relate to it soo much. And it's meaning is fairly obvious...to me anyway.
@Bloody_Kisses thanks for sharing what it means to you.

This song is about you. If you understand Metallica's message from this day and age it was all about corporate greed, the evils of the media and the government and corruption.
James himself is miserable because HE insists that the weight of the world be on his shoulders. There's more to life than what you see, and throughout all his songs he is trying to make you see. This song is for those that do and are in the same stream as him.
These times are sent to try man's souls. When we stand there screaming the truth of the world and yet if falls on deaf ears, would that not drive you to insanity? He stood there screaming, fearing that no one would listen.
When he says "There's something wrong with all you see. You you'll take it all on yourself. Remember, misery loves company." He means that you already know that our lives in America are owned by corporate greed, and that you the listener who understands tries to take the evils of the world onto his shoulders and feels that it is his mission to correct the misdeeds of mankind.
Misery Loves Company. I love that line, because it means that no matter how much you scream, even if you can't hear them, someone else is screaming the truth right there with you.

this is my favorite song off the black album....the riff is so haunting.
I think it might be about someone who is really really annoying and yet thinks everyone loves him. He also constantly complains about having a bad life and stuff without even caring that people have much worse situations than him. I'm not sure how it would fit in but just a side note i think the line; "The empty can rattles the most." means the stupidest people have very strong opinions and voice them whereas intelligent people tend to keep quiet.
It seems that this song is James' opinion of those, such as myself, who tend to dwell on suffering in life, rather than the fun and games. I personally think that too many people spend too little time on the negative aspects of people and life, but that's just me. I have known this song for years, but just today the lyrics struck a chord with me. No one wants to hear about suffering and pain, so those who do talk about it talk "louder" to get their point across. The line "The empty can rattles the most" would suggest that from James' perspective, those who "preach" suffering really have nothing to say but insist on being heard. I don't particularly appreciate this opinion, but I love this song and I can understand where James is coming from.
This song is so relevant to today’s world. You have people jumping on all the different “causes” gun control, climate change or Trump and people scream about how they want to change the world but can not even manage their own life. Smothered in tragedy they are off to save the world. No one will listen to you when they know you are smothered by your own wrong headed ideas. They know only what they have heard with out checking to see if it’s true. They usually do not have much intelligent to say either. Just my two cents worth.
@ritewing This is exactly what this song is about

Excellent base lines -- Metallica rocks. To the point, the song is about respect, power, and the profound isolation experienced by one who would differ from the crowd. Maybe it is about Jesus? I think that is a waste of my time. Maybe it is about Satan. That is a waste of time as well.
This song screams, in its own quite way, that your true voice has a cost but is not lost. Metallica is saying that, it must mean something.
It's a really ignorant outside perception of someone with depression by someone who hasn't had depression themselves. Ironically this just makes the person even more depressed rather than actually helping them. Still a beautiful song musically though. I particularly love the part in the middle where its just the bass riff and the guitar volume swells.
To my mind it's a really critical outside analysis of someone with depression, by someone who probably hasn't had depression themselves.
