Zoo Station Lyrics
Zoo Station
I'm ready
I'm ready for the laughing gas
I'm ready
I'm ready for what's next
I'm ready to duck
I'm ready to dive
I'm ready to say
I'm glad to be alive
I'm ready
I'm ready for the push
The cool of the night
The warmth of the breeze
I'll be crawling 'round
On my hands and knees
Just down the line...Zoo Station
Gotta make it on time...Zoo Station
I'm ready
I'm ready for the gridlock
I'm ready...to take it to the street
I'm ready for the shuffle
Ready for the deal
Ready to let go of the steering wheel
I'm ready
Ready for the crush
(She's just down the line)...Zoo Station
(Got to make it on time)...Zoo Station
Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright, It's alright
Hey baby, hey baby, hey baby, hey baby
It's alright, it's alright
(Alright, you can turn it up)
Time is a train
Makes the future the past
Leaves you standing in the station
Your face pressed up against the glass
I'm just down the line from your love...(Zoo Station)
You know I'm under the sign...(Zoo Station)
I've gotta make it on time
Make it on time...(Zoo Station)
That's alright...(Zoo Station)
Just two stops down the line...(Zoo Station)
Just a stop down the line...
I'm ready for the laughing gas
I'm ready
I'm ready for what's next
I'm ready to duck
I'm ready to dive
I'm ready to say
I'm glad to be alive
I'm ready
I'm ready for the push
The warmth of the breeze
I'll be crawling 'round
On my hands and knees
Gotta make it on time...Zoo Station

Ready to let go of the steering wheel

Of all U2's album openers, this is the best. I dare anyone to find a better opener than Zoo Station. It gets you pumped for the attitude and power of the rest of Achting Baby.
If you listen to the beat through the whole song, it sounds like a train. I think the meaning of this song are to illustrate, create a feeling, about the changes in Europe after the Berlin wall; just before the final establish among the countries to the European Union. Berlin are a symbol after the course of events from the second world war until the Berlin wall were pulled down. The song was written one or two years afterwards.
The beat of a train symbolize the constantly changes that we cant stop and it still goes on..
I think this song is masterpiece, specially combined with the intro on the Zooropa-tour. Check it on the concert from Sydney 1994 and you understand what I mean.
I think this song was inspired by an actual train station in Berlin(Zoo something-I can't remember). Anyway, it deals with time passing by.
@U2aholic The title comes from Zoo Bahnhof, a train station in Berlin where the underground portion of the U2 line begins. Officially called Zoologischer Garten, the station is the stop for the Berlin Zoo

indeed U2aholic! It was inspired by theZoologischer (sp?)Garten station where the U2 and U3 line meet. Anywho... I love this song. A great way to start off Achtung Baby!
To me it kinda starts off a new era for U2. As after Rattle n Hum they kinda were in overload and were ready to give it all up. Also this is when Edge broke up with his wife and was ready to quit and i read that Bono said that with out Edge they would not have gone on. Bono actualy referd to this as U2 breaking up then reforming as a new band with the same members. AB was a masive change in U2 and their direction (much greater then the more gentle changes between War to the Joshua Tree). So yeah 'Im read...' lines are saying 'here we are, this is us now'.
I read a but much into this here but i have it as a bit of a response to 'Love rescue me' (see my coments on it). Were Love rescue me is the end of Bono the Christion and Zoo Station says 'hello to Bono the rock star'.
I don't really agree with 2861U2. U2 has had many opening songs such as streets, vertigo, and beautiful day only to name a few.
I'm not saying I do not like this song but I mean come on, the best opener, I don't think so. But this song is very good on the Vertigo Dvd.
Basically I see this song as U2's way of announcing their new style to the world. A world apart from the previous albums (The Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum). Fantastic however!
2861U2, i'm with yoiu!!! For an opening this song kivck ass :D
Although i love this song, it is still a puzzle to figure out de message 100%... Sure they refere to berlin, but i doubt that the message ends there. C'mmon it's u2 :D !!! Maybe that Zoo Station is also a state of mind... And the only train he can ride is "her" train??? ---"I'm just down the line from your love..."
Yeah it's a song about the passage of time, it's also a song about change, and about being, well, ready to handle the change, ready to deal with the future. This really, as others have pointed out, is just U2 announcing that they're the new and improved U2, and all bets are off.
This is years later and I don't make comments very often. Can't believe that people think that U2 makes songs about anything not grandiose. Passing of time IS grandiose.

This album came after Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum. Sounds were different and they made a HUGE statement that they realized that sounds were changing and that they weren't going anywhere. They were right on par, if not ahead, of the change. That's it. THEY ANNOUNCED IT WITH THIS SONG.

I started in college in 91' and this is the first album my new friends listened to. Thought it was good, but now great. We thought we blew speakers at the beginning, because of this distortion.
