The Last Beat Of My Heart Lyrics
In the sharp gust of love
My memory stirred
When time wreathed a rose
A garland of shame
Its thorn my only delight
War torn, afraid to speak
We dare to breathe
Majestic
Imperial
A bridge of sighs
Solitude sails
In a wave of forgiveness
On angels' wings
Reach out your hands
Don't turn your back
Don't walk away
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
Close to you
'Til the last beat
Of my heart
At the close of day
The sunset cloaks
These words in shadowplay
Here and now, long and loud
My heart cries out
And the naked bone of an echo says
Don't walk away
Reach out your hands
I'm just a step away
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
Close to you
'Til the last beat
Of my heart
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
'Til the last beat
'Til the last fleeting beat
Of my heart
My memory stirred
When time wreathed a rose
A garland of shame
Its thorn my only delight
War torn, afraid to speak
We dare to breathe
Majestic
Imperial
A bridge of sighs
Solitude sails
In a wave of forgiveness
On angels' wings
Don't turn your back
Don't walk away
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
Close to you
'Til the last beat
Of my heart
The sunset cloaks
These words in shadowplay
Here and now, long and loud
My heart cries out
And the naked bone of an echo says
Don't walk away
I'm just a step away
How in the world
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
Close to you
'Til the last beat
Of my heart
Can I wish for this?
Never to be torn apart
'Til the last beat
'Til the last fleeting beat
Of my heart

SIOUXSIE: "It's about being fragile and exposed." Source: Option 03/89.
I think Siouxsie and Severin did write this song together at a time when the band was close to falling apart. According to Budgie: "it was a sad, intense expression of how far you would go for somebody". I saw them play this song in 1991 and it was chilling.
@lokithecat are you sure this is true? the band broke up 7 years after this song came out

For me, this is the fear that being in love can create. How in the world could I wish to be close to someone for the rest of my life? So poetic, 'til the last fleeting beat of my heart. Beautiful!
Have you ever been "in love" with two people?...In this beautifully crafted piece, a soul is at warfare over the haunting realization that they are controlled by lust, consumed by love, and tormented within the guilt that they can NEVER say NO...
Just a more spiritual and metaphoric interpretation for those who love to swim in the "deep end"....
Excellent song. Beautiful and haunting. Siouxsie's voice sounds great on this one. I'm going to say the obvious...it's a love song.
@MrLongrove Yes. its a love song.
@MrLongrove Yes. its a love song.
Siouxsie co-wrote this one with Severin; i do believe it was the last song they wrote together.
To me, this song is about letting go of the old and getting ready for new things but also looking back at the past. Its about never forgetting the past. Always keeping it with you. It is about figuring out why the past is the past and why we must move on. It is about letting go of the events but not of the memories and who you have become because of it
in my opinion I think that last beat of my heart, is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I will continue an add it is THE love song of all time. Love you Siouxsie and Severin.
A bridge of sighs; Solitude sails; In a wave of forgiveness; On angels' wings; --This part beckoned a different interpretation for me. It felt as if the one departing is the speaker. The speaker is dying and professing their infallible love until the very end. Almost like a last love letter.
[Edit: spacing doesn't work so I added punctuation]
I think what it sounds to me it means like that old traditional wedding vow..she probably actually means "til death do we part"...to me its a love song.
