Of Course Lyrics
Of course this land is dangerous!
All of the animals are capably murderous.
And when I was a boy,
my big brother held on to my hands,
then he made me slap my own face
I looked up to him then, and still do
He was trying to teach me something
Now I know what it was!
Now I know what he meant!
Now I know how it is!
Ohh, ohh, ohh ohh, ohh, ohh ohh
One must eat the other who runs free before him
Put them right into his mouth
While fantasizing the beauty of his movements
A sensation not unlike slapping yourself in the face...
Slapping yourself in the face...
Slapping yourself in the face...
All of the animals are capably murderous.
my big brother held on to my hands,
then he made me slap my own face
I looked up to him then, and still do
He was trying to teach me something
Now I know what it was!
Now I know what he meant!
Now I know how it is!
Ohh, ohh, ohh ohh, ohh, ohh ohh
Put them right into his mouth
While fantasizing the beauty of his movements
A sensation not unlike slapping yourself in the face...
Slapping yourself in the face...
Slapping yourself in the face...

I know what you mean about the beat having a kind of oriental feel, it also reminds me of the kind of music you hear on a ferris wheel.
I think it is funny how true this song is, if you want to make it in life, you have to trample over other people to get to the top, I guess that is what Perry's brother was trying to teach him.
I was listening to Radiohead's Knives Out recently and something about that song reminded me of this one. Both are incredible songs that cut right to the bone of the Darwinian existential existence that is life on earth. Here's the Radiohead lyric that reminded me of course:
So knives out Catch the mouse Don't look down, shove it In your mouth
Both of these songs explore the irony of loving life yet having to consume life in order to sustain it. This happens literally when we eat and figuratively when we do what we do in order to get money to eat.
dear all,
meaning of this song: whenever we hurt somebody we're also hurting ourselves.
you can extrapolate that to the society in general (and the first few lines of the song reference to that) and to the financial system:
I love this song, even though, I'm not exactly sure what it means. my best estimation, is that Perry is talking about having to destroy something you love, in order to survive.
i think its about morality. society (big brother) teaches us a moral code and to dislike ourselves when we breach it (slapping ourselves in the face). i think the line 'eat the other who runs free beore him' is about punishing other people who breach the moral code (or maybe propriety is a better word than morality). and 'while fantisising....' is about romanticising our actions -we usually consider morality/propriety to be valuable, but maybe Perry's implying that to be free is really more valuable. this makes sense to me in terms of Perry's drug use -maybe, like the third song on this album, he's being scornful of people who consider drugs immoral and themselves more holy than junkies, when really maybe the junkies freedom is more valuable. the first line of the song i think refers to why we need a moral code -to protect ourselves, so overall i think this song is pointing out how our morality isnt really the high and valuable thing we often treat it as
now i know what it was, now i know what he meant..... WHAT?! what does it mean?
Such a comical song it is though. The beat is almost ludacris in it's oriental air, makes you wanna rock from side to side like a guy on weed.
la la ,la la, lalala, la la ...that is my favorite part!!! this song is awesome, and all of your interpretations are right on
Perry Farrell is a vegetarian and PETA supporter. Does this help?
It sounds to me like he was thinking about the nature of the food chain and it reminded him of when his older brother grabbed his arm and made him slap himself in the face. It's an amusing way of looking at that process in general.
