Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road Lyrics | 14 years ago |
perfection. i would just like to add that you don't have to 17 to feel this way. |
Matt Nathanson – Bulletproof Weeks Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i agree with what you're saying completely. i think it makes the cliche of all relationships quite vulnerable, really. you don't have to be young and innocent to feel this way, reflecting on a relationship. some people just do that to you, regardless of age. |
Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i've actually thought that as well. probably one of the reasons why the song hits me so hard sometimes. kudos. |
Ryan Adams – Halloween Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this song has always resonated with me for many reasons because i've always felt like i could relate to this gal. first this song always reminds me of fall with the imagery of halloween. its my favorite time of the year. i've also thought her birthday was close to or on halloween with the way he's saying "we're here to help her sing her songs" like they've all gathered for a special occasion, but in the morning, they're all gone. this girl is someone who seems stubborn, won't let people in sometimes, bottles things up (mildly self-defeating). she's a drinker (she's angry but it's just the alcohol) - this might be the way she copes with some of the things going on in her life, probably in the midst of being a 20/30 something unsure about her life direction. i don't think she's completely miserable, though especially being she seems to have a lighthearted angle as well with the notion of dancing, grinning and snowflake eating before she is self-depricating with the alcohol, keeping things to herself. she's young, a little fucked up. who hasn't been this way when they're young. |
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – Mastermind Lyrics | 14 years ago |
to me, this seems like one of those "hey, we've been tippy-toeing around this for a while, i know you've been hurt in the past, but i'm ready to jump, are you in" type songs. she's ready for him and this is her way of showing her own persuasion. |
Damien Jurado – Ohio Lyrics | 14 years ago |
being from the buckeye state, this song naturally pulls on my heart-strings by default. recently, it especially hits home. i have a twin sister that moved to england a few years ago and whenever i hear it, it reminds me of how much she struggled during the first year she was there and how much she really does "belong to her mother and the state of ohio". it conveys so much emotion and incredible longing. the version of this on the "daytrotter sessons" is just absolutely haunting. |
Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up Lyrics | 14 years ago |
genius. i agree with you, completely. ain't love a bitch? |
Ben Kweller – Gypsy Rose Lyrics | 14 years ago |
as taken from ben's "daytrotter sessions" - "This is a sad song about a lonely man who has nothing in his life except this prostitute, Gypsy Rose... He visits her every Monday morning... brings her clothes and money and food.... puts everything he has in this relationship that's going nowhere." |
Damien Jurado – Dimes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
you never hear songs about being the other "guy". |
Matt Nathanson – Falling Apart Lyrics | 14 years ago |
there are some errors in the lyrics posted. these are from matt's site: maybe it's because i'm crazy or maybe it's because i just can't honestly tell you what i want. it's never enough to stay still and hold you, to break loose and run, the taste of you, wild on my tongue am i no good to you now? yeah, we're spilling over. we're falling away spent my days with doctors and my nights with crooks and all of them, would sell me for a song so i'm here safe dear, fiction in your arms. am i no good to you now? i'm falling apart we're spilling over i'm falling apart don't dim me out, don't start me over forever changed, i should have told you and all i say doesn't matter anyway all i say doesn't matter anyway i've given up, so call my bluff cause i just need to be reminded who i am i'm falling apart yeah, we're spilling over i'm giving up, i'm starting over i want to be the one who holds you. i so want to be loved so come on, love. come on, love. |
Old Crow Medicine Show – Wagon Wheel Lyrics | 14 years ago |
sad? really? i've never been sad listening to this. it's upbeat and just a good old happy song. i really don't know how anyone wouldn't want to swoop someone up and dance around like an idiot to it. |
Ryan Adams – Blue Sky Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
not at all. unless tweedy wrote this after hearing '29'. i'm not sure how old the song was, but the album came out in 2005 and was recorded in 2004. you need to get the album '29' my friend. |
Gary Allan – Loving You Against My Will Lyrics | 15 years ago |
oh, contemporary country music such as this. always my guilty pleasure. the song is self-explanatory. loving someone when you know you shouldn't, yet you continue to, regardless of how wrong or painful it is. |
Ryan Adams – Easy Plateau Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i hadn't listened to 'cold roses' in a while so i popped it in the other day, then looking over the singles from the album, as 'easy plateau' was released as a single. i don't know how i didn't realize this, but if you look at the cover of the single, not only does it it have a religous symbolism (mary) but it also looks similar to the shape of a woman's vagana. similar to the symbolism in kings of leon's album 'aha shake heartbreak'. i see the escapism angle for sure that supposablethumbs suggests, but now i feel it also could have another, much more sexual meaning, especially these lyrics: "sleepyhead, come on let's take a ride to the easy plateau in the back of your mind. go up through the alley, take the door under the stairs, my head ain't filled with nothing but cats and rocking chairs..." thinking about it, i really can see this as a much more complex and raunchy song about oral fixation. |
Sugarland – Stay Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i will be the first to admit that i'm not exactly the biggest contemporary country fan. i happened to be flipping through channels one day a few years back and caught this song. i was completely moved with the whole idea of the song and the video. interpret it anyway you like. i agree for the most part with clover25. while the basis for the song is from the "other" woman to the man whom she is having the affair with, it's not a "cheating" song. it's dealing with the extreme emotions of BEING THE OTHER WOMAN. it's an up and down battle. it doesn't matter whether you agree with her for being in the affair, you don't know how and why she got into it. i agree that there is a loneliness and desperation that attracted her to this situation, but, i do feel the protagonist does love the man, no matter how wrong it is [i've given you my best why does she get the best of you]. you don't have to agree with what she's doing to emphathize and it is especially unfair to just assume she's just a "homewrecker". she' not a monster. she's human, which is obvious through the raw emotions of the desperation of her wanting him to stay with her, then being angry of continually being told he's going to leave his wife. then, finally getting the strength to bipass whatever love she does have for this man and tell him to "stay" with his wife. she's never going to get what she wants [i.e. him] it's truly a very powerful song. |
Hayes Carll – Long Way Home Lyrics | 15 years ago |
in the beginning he's talking about himself in third person "Ramblin boy you've been around, Dallas to the underground, High above and down below". he then continues into the song as if he's reflecting on a previous relationship or lost love that he either gave up too soon on or gave up without trying. you almost get the feeling that the two spent time together through music or "running" around (I would give anything, For one more night to run and one last song to sing) because he wants to just got back to those times, at least once. such remorse and sadness. it's beautifully written and even better when heard live. |
Ryan Adams – Funeral Marching Lyrics | 15 years ago |
these lyrics are wrong. these are from answeringbell.com Oh, what's the use in trying? Thick as thieves and packs of lies Marching to the palaces of night All my life I looked for something All my seas are drops of rain Drunk as sailors drinking from your hand Girl, you can do just as you like Girl, you can do just as you please Girl, you wanted, you could've been dead Now, you're swinging like a funeral march in June And it's way past July Oh, what's the use in trying? All the time, it ends in nothing Oh, what's the use in trying now? Burn all the canvases They painted up the queens in crutches Trial to see how they all see you now Girl, you can do just as you like Girl, you can do just as you please Girl, you wanted, you could've been dead Now, you're swinging like a funeral march, oh Yeah, but nobody died Oh, you're swinging like a funeral march Oh, you used to be beautiful Oh, you used to be beautiful Oh, you used to be beautiful Oh... Oh, what's the use in trying? Everything turns to nothing No mechanics here can save your life Moons crash inside the opera Oozing all the starless actors All hung there in pieces of a sky Girl, you can do just as you like Girl, you can do just as you please Girl, you wanted, you could've been dead Now, you're swinging like a funeral march, oh Yeah, but nobody died Oh, you're swinging like a funeral march Oh, you used to be beautiful Oh, you used to be beautiful Oh, you used to be beautiful Oh, you used to be beautiful... |
Hayes Carll – It's A Shame Lyrics | 15 years ago |
two people who just keep missing their chances with each other or one reason or another. that's the thing i love the most about hayes' lyrics. while they tend to be pretty self-explanatory they aren't simple. they are raw and open, like you're living out one of his memories, whether they be good, happy, painful or whiskey-soaked. |
Hayes Carll – Down The Road Tonight Lyrics | 15 years ago |
just a fun, tongue-in-cheek song about the things you can come across in life [i.e. down the road]. a fun song to hear in a dive bar, driving beer with your buddies. |
Hayes Carll – Flowers & Liquor Lyrics | 15 years ago |
pretty self-explanatory. this song is about persistance and sex. |
Damien Rice – Cannonball Lyrics | 15 years ago |
your* not you're. wow, spelling bee champ right here. |
Damien Rice – Cannonball Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think you're interpretation is spot on. cheers! |
Joe Purdy – Balcony/Green Eyes Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the song sounds like forbidden love or love that just can't be right now. i'm not sure if its just because the circumstances are that they really aren't "supposed" to be together (It's enough to make me run away with you, darling) or that he's already with someone, the gal has greens while the woman he is still with has blue and green eyes wants him, however, because of his situation with the other woman, its not possible right now. (She says this isn't easy I know, loving the hands that you ain't supposed to hold and I'll pray for the days that I wont sleep alone). i think i'm going more for the latter because he obviously has feelings for green eyes. |
Joe Purdy – Far Away Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think this song is about someone he let go or let him ago, long ago that he still thinks about. just as it seems so distance, here comes the waves and she's back in his head. a beautiful and simple tune, indeed. |
Mic Christopher – Listen Girl Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is just a great love song. he's happy, she's happy - sounds like it's new. he's now just telling her how he feels. its so whimsical and just beautiful. bless mic! the frames does a great cover of this in his memory on the "the roads outgrown" disk. |
Ryan Adams – Memory Lane Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is one of the best things he's recorded in the past two years. i think the meaning is pretty obvious - it reminds me of the end of summer/beginning of fall, when the air first starts to get real crisp in the morning. he's going through life, with memories that are still attached to him, like shackles on his ankles. this gal really did a number on him. "i sleep by the window sill sounding out and dream for real of simple times of hands in tangle, fingers engaged" - pure genius. |
Patty Griffin – Up to the Mountain Lyrics | 15 years ago |
full title of this song is "up to the mountain (MLK song)". garbage's interpretation is correct, however i also thing this song is also highly influenced by the power and struggles of mlk. such a master of lyrics that patty griffin! |
Jason Isbell – In a Razor Town Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it sounds like an outsider's perspective of a couple in a small, one horse town who are just no good for each other anymore. they are both suffering and they just won't let go. the "razor" is a metaphor. when you get cut by a razor it bleeds, slowly and painfully. this is what this relationship is doing to these two people. as the outsider said, he 'wasn't there to see it working properly'. just another great example of jason's amazing song writing ability... |
The Weepies – Takes So Long Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i know there are different ways you can go about this song, but from my own interpretation i feel like it's the struggle the narrator has with patience and the unknown. sometimes you just got to let go and give things time and stop asking why. |
Ryan Adams – Dear Chicago Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i like your interpretation. i think deep down everyone has had a "chicago" in their life and the realization that the feelings and emotions associated with that individual aren't as strong or even existent is a bittersweet and sometimes numbing feeling. |
Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up Lyrics | 15 years ago |
yup. and wanting them anyway. |
Ryan Adams – La Cienega Just Smiled Lyrics | 15 years ago |
while i still think there is credibility to my depiction of the song, i really like your ideas. addict can be for anything - drugs, alcohol, a person. good interpretation. |
Frightened Rabbit – Good Arms vs. Bad Arms Lyrics | 15 years ago |
while i understand where you might think this is about an affair, i don't think he's actually been cheated on. i think he just realizes that he gave something up that he was too quick on the draw about and the idea of this former lover being with other is making his blood boil. he doesn't know how to deal with all these emotions. such a typical male... no, scratch that. such a typical human. |
Laura Marling – New Romantic Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"And I think he knew where I was going 'cause he put Ryan Adams on, 'cause I think he thinks it makes me weak, but it only ever makes me strong." i like the use of name dropping with someone that has so much passion, conviction and drama in their own music (ryan adams) and not just because he is my absolutely favorite artist. its more that she can admit that other music makes he feel something and this guy tries to use that to his advantage and instead she knows that it will just make her even more empowered. i've actually had a few guys do this to me. |
Ryan Adams – Touch, Feel & Lose Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is one of my favorites to play on the jukebox, right before the bar closes, after an evening of heavy drinking. i'm not too proud to admit that i've danced around with this, beer in hand, drinking everything away the song could mean |
Bon Iver – Blood Bank Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is the best interpretation for this song i have read. i completely agree with you. |
The Airborne Toxic Event – Sometime Around Midnight Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i couldn't have said it any better. sounds like she still has a hold on him and him to her. |
Greg Laswell – Not Out Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think he's coming to terms with the relationship being completely over and that it wasn't completely his fault. and he's also saying he's not going to let past memories and events effect him in the way that would hinder his emotions (I'm not gonna fall down today, instead I will buckle my knees and sway against sweet memories.) great song. |
Whiskeytown – Under Your Breath Lyrics | 15 years ago |
we've all felt this song before. i sure as hell have. and freewheelin said it right, sometimes it is just easier to hear nothing than to face reality. sometimes you just don't want to cause hurt, even though you already are whether you admit it to yourself or not. |
Missy Higgins – Angela Lyrics | 15 years ago |
that sounds like what this song really is about. one of my best friend's name is angie (short for angela) and it reminds me of her strength. |
The Felice Brothers – Her Eyes Dart 'Round Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song is perfection. at least it should be in any country girls heart. its unapologetic love. |
Ryan Adams – Dear John Lyrics | 15 years ago |
originalspies nailed it perfectly, much like the coffin in john's grave. it is amazing to me that a man can be able to write from a woman's persective with such accuracy and emotion, similar to that of patty griffin's "long drive home." that takes real balls, guts. and just like i feel for patty, i have an unapologetic respect and love for ryan adams. |
The Frames – True Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is the best description ever for this song. i have lived the life of this protagonist before, exactly to a T. |
Griffin House – Let Me In Lyrics | 15 years ago |
well, i think the sex is implied by the way he's talking. he wants all of her. |
Oren Lavie – Her Morning Elegance Lyrics | 15 years ago |
wesleybryant's meaning is almost exactly what i thought the song was about. i don't think it's about terminal illness at all. but as we all understand. we take what we want to get out of music. that's the beauty of it. |
Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
sinatra blue = ol' blue eyes he had blue eyes and was a crooner, singing from the soul and very emotional. |
Kathleen Edwards – Hockey Skates Lyrics | 15 years ago |
is she having an affair in this? or being the other woman? |
Josh Ritter – To the Dogs or Whoever Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this is such a dude's song. and i love it. how could you not want to get up and dance whenever you heard this, outside, middle of summer, fireflies and camping light strung along. drinking beer in the moond. |
Greg Laswell – How the Day Sounds Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think it's his way of coming alive after being left stale by love and life for so long. realizing, as katie said that what he knew of life and love was not "real". another fantastic song by greg. and the video is just spot-on! |
Greg Laswell – Comes and Goes (In Waves) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
he's right, though. it comes and goes and waves when you are trying to get over someone. sometimes they are little ripples on your feet, little reminders that this was a part of your life. other times the waves are so strong that the tide takes you in, and you sink from all the memories, taking all of your energy. such a great song. |
