So, now we're going to call Grunge "Emo?" You people need to stop watching pop-punk Yellowcard or Simple Plan videos on MTV and go to a decent music store. You can buy any of these late-eighties early-nineties Alternative Rock albums used for around $5, probably less. Or watch VH1 in that a.m portion of the night, when they show their countdown shows. You might get lucky and stumble on the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. I highly recomend this particular show to anyone who cares enough about music to comment on a Sonic Youth message board.
Just for the record, the first emo band was The Cure, ok? Sonic Youth is the first Alternative Rock band, paving the way for The Smashing Pumpkins and the like. Oddly enough, the combination of Emo and Alternative Rock ushered in Grunge. |

Oliver Cromwell was a Puritan leader that led a revolt against the British crown and seized the throne. Costello is referring to the puritan/prude style that british society has taken up, and expressing his dislike for it. |

holly golightly was the name of Audrey Hepburns character in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, old old great great movie. It makes me think that maybe it's just some hooker jack found in London when they were making this record, and he decided to have a duet with her. apparently, ive heard, london has great hookers. |

| Led Zeppelin – Hey Hey What Can I Do Lyrics

this song, to me, is about a man who is in love with a hooker or a slut, but the woman won't love him back. So the man debates throughout the song whether or not to move on and find a new love, or stay and try to make the woman love him. In the end, he decides that there's nothing he can do, so he will move on. This may be one of my favorite songs. It is a woven piece of music that just flows along for the longest time. Plants vocals bring the sound in this song into the realm of perfection. This is one of the rarest zep songs there is because it isn't recorded on any of their albums. It was only released as a B side to the Immigrant Song single, and was only just re-released on the box set, which costs a WHOLE lotta money. Atlantic finally put that single back on the market and ive found it on Amazon.com for like five bucks. Just for your information. When I first heard this song, the only phrase that stuck in my head was, "Wanna tell you 'bout the girl I love." One of the best sung lyrics ever. |

| John Lennon – Working Class Hero Lyrics

i can definitely tell that workingclass hero is 14 because no one any older would post any comment that long without punctuation. im winded just by reading it. anyway, john lennon has been my favorite artist for as long as iv'e been able to listen to music and understand it. this song is about the human condition, you work your butt off your entire life, and you never get any farther up the ladder than where you were when you were born. that is all due to the social class system we have in america. the rich get richer and the middle class(the largest by far demographic in our nation) absorbs all the problems in the country. when in the song he says "keep you doped with religion and sex and t.v., and you think your so clever and CLASSLESS and free, but your still fucking peasants as far as i can see,..." he's saying that when you think you've got life figured out, your really just believing what the people in power want you to. he was a genius. another genius, the late and great Stanley Kubrick was mentioned before and must be acclaimed once again by me. |

this song is about drug addiction.
"you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"
think about it.
"they stab it with their steely knives, but they just cant kill the beast" the best line here.
not really my favorite song, but a good one. way too overated.

this song has no unintentional drug references in it. i agree with pj10...anyone who honestly believes lennon wrote this song because of a painting his son did is a shmuck. all four of the guys were constantly giving bs interviews and were labled in the rock world as compulsive liers. im not saying all their songs have drug references in them, if they did, they wouldnt be my favorite band. not even more than a few have drugs in them. but, this one does, you shmucks! |

deffinitly lord of the rings. zeppelin knew who was better at telling a story than them. not many, but tolkien was a better story teller with deeper meanings and plant knew that, so they idolized and acknowledged him in a lot of their songs, and devoted a few songs to him as well. in the beginning of the song they mention avalon, the mystic island in the tale of king arthur, not in lotr, just thought id point that out. |

| Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics

number one... the lord of the rings series was written about wwII in the late forties and fifties. it was published in the late fifties and read by soldiers in Vietnam. number two...most of zeppelin's songs have a line or stanza about lotr. some have the whole meaning about the series (ramble on, over the hills and far away).
number three...this song has about 3 lines about lotr, but has a much, much deeper meaning, although lotr is a deep epic with great meaning in and of itself.
four...i believe this song is about two paths to either heaven or hell. the woman at the beginning is "selling out" and being tricked by "all that glitters is gold" to drugs and slowly killing herself, which is satans betrayal. throughout the song(her life), the piper(god)bekons her to join him, but the woman continues on the path till her death when "she's buying the stairway to heaven" where her heaven will in reality be a trick by satan and in truth be hell. she has been lured and betrayed by satan and has paid eternity for it. Happy? |

i may be the only one i know that really likes this song. intoxicating accoustics and haunting lyrics and characteristic zeppelin harmony. theres a flow to this song that you don't get from rock today, and probably never will again. if i could choose a song make love to, this would be it. |

once again, zeppelin seaches for their perfect lady, or are they searching for power over all(the one ring)? they are on a journey to find the "girl so fair," it could be either one. with the tolkien references, it does seem to follow the story of LOTR. and im convinced it's not about the hobbit, but of the "rings" series. |
