haha, tastemaker: well, by chance I'm checking this many many years after I posted that original comment; well, I still feel about the same way. Yes, I know this is, like, 7-8 years later? Incredible what a bored night of reclaiming internet accounts can yield!

Animal Collective – For Reverend Green Lyrics 18 years ago
First, someone should really change the listed version as the lyrics are terribly, horribly wrong (refer to the correct ones on page 2).
Secondly, I don't think there is much of a case for this song being about money in a broader sense, save for the reference to a child's dollar, and the arbitrary 'Reverend Green', which presumably refers to Al Green (has AC ever needed a reason for anything?).
----
A running child's bloody with burning knees
A careless childs money flew in the trees
A camping child's happy with winter's freeze
A lucky child don't know how lucky he is
----
The running child runs because the joy of running supersedes the hurt of bloody knees;
A careless child's money flies in the trees because the child isn't consumed with protecting it, because it's only a piece of paper, because while it might be upsetting for a second, the child has some innate understanding that the man-made things we buy are only worth a meager little piece of man-made paper which could just as easily burn, tear, dissolve, or disappear into a tree (unlike joy, creativity, family, etc.);
A winter's freeze doesn't bother a child who is simply happy to be outside in the elements, free of disappointment and expectations (an adult would curse the Gods for ruining their rare leisure time);
Kids are lucky simply for not realizing how lucky they are, a baby smiles easily (and cries just as easily) because babies live in the moment and aren't weighted down by anxiety and bullshit of tainted adult souls (at least not yet).
The chorus/refrain represents relief from the anxiety of adult-life and celebrates the simplicity of singing a song, playing music with friends, breaking from the morbidity of life to live in the present and take things as they come, like a child (sometimes we don't feel human; it's not a disorder, it's the natural reaction of a sensitive being to our modern insensitive state of being).
At least two members (Avey and Panda) are new parents, which explains quite a bit of this album and this song in particular. They've probably been reminded, through interaction with their children, how simple and innocent life should be, and how much joy we can find in those basic elements we cannot change, as long as we maintain the right perspective: good-humour, patience, curiosity, unbridled enthusiasm for what we love, etc.
Most likely the song is about losing your childlike innocence and growing older into the disappointments and drudgery of adult life. But it's a celebration of the simple things.
To get biblical, those who enter Heaven are the ones who have the faith of a child: that things will work out, that they aren't as bad as our world makes them seem. And truly, considering the world we live in, this is a pretty wise observation. To transcend the bullshit we have to find a way to live outside of it, like children, like artists, like pure human beings.

Band of Horses – The Funeral Lyrics 19 years ago
i don't think it has anything to do with teasing someone you're obsessed with...

from what i gather, it's a lament; waiting for morning to wake the ones you love is all you've got left. It's too late to call, so we'll trust that in the morning that the people we care for will still be alive. but at every occasion, and at any time you're prepared for a funeral, prepared for the age when your loved ones start to die off.

The Dismemberment Plan – The Face of the Earth Lyrics 19 years ago
HOLY SHIT, 66exeter! YOU ARE A DUMBFUCK, STOP POSTING BAD LYRICS! Someone re-post as follows:

as kisses go, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary, the alkaline lips, the fingers hooked around my belt.
she had to go, she took a step back in and then she started to smile, i heard a funny sound and then everything seemed to shift...
A crazy wail, a funny shutter of a bad magnetic event, a ghost ran through us,
Moving like a shadow of a cloud... I wasn't sure, I thought that something
happened but I didn't know what, the moment seemed to fade, And I turned my
eyes back to her.. t
hat's when I saw, I freeze the look of pre-alert and study it still, her smile starts to loosen, her pupils yawn wide and then she's blown... from the face of the earth.
There wasn't any wind, no noise, no nothing just a body jerked skyward, limbs flailing like an unloved marionette, at impossible speed, receding away like a
far away dot...I can see her still, scream for help but no one answered...
she turned end on end like a long lost astronaut, I felt the summer air reclaim me,
the chirp of a bird, the whisper of leaves, And I was frozen... to the face of the earth.
I never really knew the way she lived her life,
I thought that something
happened but she never called back, I didn't know her family or friends at
all... With no one to call, summer turned into fall, I gave up... It's been a
couple years and I guess I'm fine with it, It's not like we were married It
was three or four months, And nothing's really different Though it seems like
I've spent My life in planes, Which is kind of strange, But I don't know.......
yeah, yeah, yeah, No, no, yeah

The Dismemberment Plan – 8.5 Minutes Lyrics 19 years ago
the nukes were launched because the sun died: "kickstart something", with the heat and the energy of nuclear power. He's not a scientist, he's a musician; whether 8.5 minutes is or isn't an accurate figure is entirely irrelevant.
Further proof: "On the other hand, oh, it's fucking freezing..." -- no sun? exactly.

terrible interpretation.
It's about an old, wealthy widow trying to preserve her youthful appeal through artificial means.

it's about white-collar, middle-class america. believing what you're told and questioning nothing other than, "how much?"

Black Eyes – someone has his fingers broken Lyrics 21 years ago
Hardly.
It speaks of intolerance in modern day america/world. Whether in the desert or in the city, the reactionaries are the same. Secret kiss = adultery (infidelity)
second sex = sexual deviancy
public faith = declaration of an off-kilter creed
second skin = stealing identities.
test results = tests? AIDS perhaps, etc.
People die for no reason, here in America. Here in everywhere.

Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics 21 years ago
I like when someone (blurppi) offers a great explanation, and then someone else (are you in) offers a terrible one despite what they should have just read.
Long story short, we're material beings. We're fundamentally greedy and essentially selfish. The rest is assumed, in lieu of the aforementioned. ultimately, I think the song is about the entropy of human priority (devolving, as it were). All of us, even the educated and informed, are just products of the type of environment we've been weaned on. And it's just a facade based on our expectations and standards (life cumulative). Who needs it? It's all bullshit, and bullshit makes us unpleasant and angry, drives us to drown the anger with a bottle, etc.

Modest Mouse – Convenient Parking Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is obviously not about migration, at least in the conventional sense. It's about a blacktop world, and our viral chains of traffic bleeding out onto the highways that are crowding out the life that once occupied our land like. Our vehicular lifestyle is like a disease spreading through the veins and overpowering the white blood cells.
It's more than evident, through other lyrical examples (cowboy dan, for one), that Modest Mouse is opposed to development and sprawl. This song is just an ironic take on the concrete jungle we're creating here in our "Modern World". As the parking lots grow larger and spew the traffic out onto roadways in some circuitous attempt to move human cargo, our hearts constrict and become smaller, and our minds absorb less life and more automation (no pun intended).

Braid – Forever Got Shorter Lyrics 22 years ago
haha, the Dismemberment plan was belting out creative jewels around the same time that your namesake was making legitimate music (I'll help you out...early 90's). Labels are for people with knowledge on musical history, not for cute little internet aliases (aww...you cry a lot?). You know where you stand? You must like emo music...right?
I can't even stress how heinous your statement about TDP is, though. According to your list of favorites, you have absolutely nothing credible, creative, original, or even remotely emo involved. How on earth can you even compare those groups to a band of Dismemberment Plan's caliber and notoriously respectable D.C. background? Chris Carabba was potty-training when The Plan were releasing their first album...and you were probably still nursing at your mother's teat like a little chimpanzee.

"i am NOT emo. i am nothing."
Generally people with the DIY mindset don't label themselves according to genres.
I guess it's true what they say about simple minds. You can only truly appreciate that which your mind has a capacity to absorb.
Your insular viewpoints are a throbbing incentive to never return to the free-sharing forums of arcane indie-pop.

And one last question: How would breaking my fingers affect my ability to verbalize opinions? You think the internet is my sole haven for bombastic reprimands?
Peace...console yourself with both soft pillow and soft music. Don't be concerned with perplexity that you can't possibly ascertain (coupled with lyrical content that exceeds your plane).

hell yeah, man. anyone with a college education and a drug-problem can write interesting lyrics. It's simply an established musical fact. But that in no way detracts from the music that is played...obviously. Just don't blindly laud a band for achieving a certain level of incoherence with their writing. He could be communicating a point, or he could be devising word structure for the strict use of aural appeal.
Anyhow...my point is even lost on me, so I'll excuse myself quietly through the backdoor.

Q And Not U – Nine Things Everybody Knows Lyrics 22 years ago
The lyrics invoke images of the scene in Traffic where the bourgeois children of the D.C. area are all conversating while engrossed in drugs. I think it's somewhat of a social commentary on the decay of popular American culture, and the perpetual downward spiral Western Civilization is experiencing. Or it could be a blanket statement enveloping dilitant, 'aristrocrat', and politician. Dereliction is not confined simply to the impoverished sectors of the American populace, but has always been seen evident in all aspects of society. Even the rich and the noble are susceptible to suicide, immorality, and self-destruction, despite the high pedestal that so defines that particular social bracket.
Well, that's my countless countless change, anyway.

:OR: a little bit too much alcohol.
But take your pick, because either scenario comes to a close with your foot on my chest and your finger in a dominant and degrading position inside of my asshole.
Leave the psychoanalysis for those whom you have met face to face, rather than over white screens opposing.
That excerpt was an impromptu attempt at displaying the ease of writing contrived "abstract" lyrics; so if you assumed that I had put some thought into it, consider yourself corrected.
I'm just so fucking tired of people jockeying for position in the "compliment line" whenever they encounter something that they don't understand. Because it is incomprehensible doesn't mean that it is innovative and profound.
They lyrics are a sweet filler, but to me, they have no particular use other than mere compliment.
"You can't put a price on over-the-top bombast".
One thing you can always count on are rave reviews when someone feels inferior.

This song reminds me of an ultra-hip art gallery, you know, a fucking chic coffeeshop or jazz club. I'm not sure where the similarities lie, but there is just this stylish vibe.
The subject matter furthers my point...it's an abstract and almost 'collegiate' manner of addressing a relationship where the female simply left, with virtually no notification or explanation...like she was blown completely off of the face of the earth.
The aftertaste resulted in something similar to "a quizzical expression suspended on confounded cheeks".
I don't know man....it's just so fucking ethereal, the song is excellent.

American Football – Honestly? Lyrics 22 years ago
Yeah...much like how "rap", and "metal", and "indie-rock" are also terrible names for musical genres.
The POINT IS that you should at least have some sense of history and knowledge of the roots before you blatantly misuse a word the refers to a genre THAT ACTUALLY DOES EXIST!!
There are specific bands who coined this categorization...it bleeds historical importance, primarily the new direction that punk and hardcore went during the late 80's and early nineties.
Another thought: where would we be without categorizations? We have broad terms so that we can organize better, be more efficient, relate to others, and save ourselves the trouble of longwinded explanations (like this one) directed towards those who have no clue what a band sounds like.
Sorry for this...I hate to run those with prior knowledge once more through the gamut, but I just can't stand musical ignorance, regardless of whether the larger purpose intended is "tolerance". Get it right, then make your case.
This is from one music fan to others.
