Sloppy Seconds – Jerry's Kids Lyrics 8 years ago
Although "Jerry's Kids" usually refers to children who are helped by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (named after comedian Jerry Lewis, who was closely associated with the charity), this song is clearly about evangelist Jerry Falwell.

@[tulip:6738] sniper Yep! It's from "Female Trouble".

Sloppy Seconds – Black Roses Lyrics 8 years ago
Sounds to me like this song is a woman getting pregnant and not telling her boyfriend about it until well into the pregnancy. He wants her to get an abortion. I'm not sure if she does or not, to be honest, but he leaves her either way.

The eponymous black roses might be a reference to the fat that she did get an abortion in spite of her Catholic upbringing, or to the argument that they had over it when she resisted.

Lines like "you can't catch me and you never will" are obviously referring to the man refusing to raise a child or pay child support.

Dethklok – Briefcase Full of Guts Lyrics 16 years ago
That looks good, Luchasaur... I also have no idea what he's saying at the (?)s, but I think the line is "sell the pack and raise the price" not "reach the price".

Anyone know what's up with the ABK?

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Proud Mary Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's hilarious that chris4420 found a quote about CCR (and John Fogerty specifically) being ANTI-DRUGS, and claims it's proof that this specific song is about smoking dope.

That's along the same line as interpreting the song from one or two words... taking a quote entirely out of context because it mentions Fogerty "dabbling with marijuana," completely ignoring the immediate follow-up, "but that was as far as it ever went."

Marilyn Manson – This Is The New Shit Lyrics 17 years ago
I think a lot of people have hit close to the mark on the meaning of this song. The way I interpret it, it's not just about censorship, or the media, or stupid people. It's about all those things and more: it's about modern society as a whole.

Manson takes aim at the general population for simply accepting whatever is fed to them by radio, TV, etc., and loving it. He slams the censors for not even taking a look at the things they're protesting. And he challenges everyone to stand up and admit that they have no idea what's going on, they don't understand what they're hearing, they're not going to move on. They're not going to better themselves, they're not going to better society... they're just going to keep on bitching about things they can't change, or they're going to keep swallowing everything they're spoon-fed by the media, and not a damn thing is going to come of it.

"Tomorrow's never coming."

This is a cover of a song by Kris Kristofferson. Very nicely done, too.

Without Face – The Violin of Erich Zann Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is based on the story "The Music of Erich Zann" by H.P. Lovecraft, in which a violinist conjures up abysmal visions of cosmic horror with his strange music. In a flat in a street that doesn't exist, no less.

Rammstein – Ohne Dich Lyrics 18 years ago
On the subject of REISE REISE, I theorize that Rammstein were planning to vary their musical style a bit, but kept most of the drastically different tracks off this album. Most of the songs for the next album (ROSENROT) were already written and considered for REISE REISE, but they may have wanted to ease the fans into the changes.

Count on ROSENROT to be more of a departure, and more "ground-breaking".

Frank Zappa – Watermelon in Easter Hay Lyrics 19 years ago
There really is a lot of emotion in this solo. It's my favorite Zappa piece. I even heard that one of Frank's final wishes was that nobody play this song on stage but his son Dweezil. Just goes to show how strongly he felt about it.

Flogging Molly – Whistles The Wind Lyrics 19 years ago
A couple small corrections and a huge one. The first one's the biggie, at no point in this song does Dave say, "Where's your God?".

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way
**The beauty in life, where's it gone?**
And somebody told me, you were doing okay
Somehow I guess they were wrong

My isolation, now there's a sobering thought
A minute alone, a lifetime too long
See the face in this mirror, so pale it could crack
**Desperately wanting a color it lacks**

**Now there's an ocean between**
Where I am and where I want to be
So you prayers in doubt, doubt not for me

Hell, I think it's a great song to sing when you're stone cold sober... you just couldn't get me to do it in public without a few drinks...

Truly the perfect country & western song.

Joey Lauren Adams – Alive Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the lyric in the second stanza above is "Until I find them" instead of "Until I find him"... makes sense, too, when you realize she's singing about a woman.

This is, I'd like to restate, a stunningly beautiful song. Thank you, Joey.

The Pogues – And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda Lyrics 20 years ago
so if the song is older than life, and you're older than the song, shouldn't you have some sort of omnipotent powers or something?

that would be cool.

Awesome song... one of the few on my "I can't listen to it without crying" list.

Flogging Molly – Grace Of God Go I Lyrics 20 years ago
I too love this song... but I'm pretty sure the lyric should be "There, for the grace of God, go I". A contraction of "there but for the grace of God go I".

Anyway, awesome song.

HIM – I Love You Lyrics 21 years ago
This is the first song by HIM that I ever heard. I turned to my friend (he was listening to the song) and said "What is that, who sings it? I like it." after hearing about 15 seconds. It's really kinda creepy-sounding as the high-note vox blend all too well with the very low chorus.

HIM – Right Here In My Arms Lyrics 21 years ago
In the interview on their website, Valo himself said "His Infernal Majesty" was a completely different band and that HIM never stood for anything. Might "His Infernal Majesty" actually be the band in the U.S. called HIM which forced them to change their name to HER in the states?

submissions
HIM – Sigillum Diaboli Lyrics 21 years ago
in the U.S. their albums are released under the name HER.

also I think I have some other corrections to the lyrics... these also seem to make more sense.

"I can see you're sad facing your pitiful lies. You don't have the strength to carry your heavy load of life." Also sometimes it sounds like "your sad face and your pitiful eyes, don't have the strength to carry your heavy load of lies."

"I will lift the burden from your shoulders, you just have to believe." Makes a whole hell of a lot more sense than "I will leave the body for your shoulder you just have to killing" especially in context with the Christ theme.

After repeatedly listening to both versions of the song (sigillum/stigmata), I think he actually says "this world's not for us" in the chorus... although "this world's built for us" would make more sense considering the religious angle.

Cradle of Filth – Cthulhu Dawn Lyrics 21 years ago
lol. The short answer would be "Cthulhu is someone you don't want to mess with." The long answer would be to quote all of Lovecraft's work on the topic. Guess which one you're getting.

I don't particularly like this song as Cradle of Filth aren't my cup of tea, but I just had to see what kinds of comments were posted.

Vote Cthulhu in 2004 or he'll eat you!

VNV Nation – Beloved Lyrics 21 years ago
GothicBlade:

That's a very interesting perspective on this song. I checked out your post here because I saw your response in the Darkangel comments.

Of course, this song is much more personal and realistic-sounding than Darkangel, and given seraph88's information is probably more of a literal expression of Ronan's real feelings toward someone. But I agree that Beloved works well as a counterpart to Darkangel.

It's good to stand back and stop looking too deep into the lyrics once in a while. Sometimes they're not intended to hide anything. Such is the case, IMO, with both of these songs. This one is clearly about a lost love (expressed uber-romantically, of course), and Darkangel is most probably a simple story-type song, intended to set a mood and deliver a storyline.

Post ended due to oncoming carpal tunnel attack ;)

HIM – Join Me In Death Lyrics 21 years ago
To clarify some points:

Satanists do not worship Satan. They worship themselves. People who worship satan are called "Suburbanite Punk Christians".

If using things like "666" and cheesy evil-sounding latin song titles and inverted pentagrams make HIM devil-worshippers, then that must also hold true for half of the heavy metal bands of the 70's and 80's. Obviously, this isn't true.

If you Xians want to push your beliefs on others, or bad-mouth people you don't even know who are just trying to make a living with their music, at least get your facts straight first.

Thank you London, we love you, good night.

Apoptygma Berzerk – Deep Red Lyrics 22 years ago
This one seems pretty obvious to me, actually: the emotional and physiological sensations experienced when harming or killing another human being. Could be considered "sick" by some, but I think it's a great expression of something the artist has (hopefully) never experienced.

VNV Nation – Darkangel Lyrics 22 years ago
Seems to me that this song may just be a first-person narrative - a story, if you will - about a divine being cast from Heaven (or wherever). It seems there may be a problem or conspiracy (talk about trite, but I don't know how else to word it) going on among the Powers that Be, which would explain the pain and suffering that go on in the world. The narrator wants to right the wrongs that have taken place, but is not prepared (or able) to reveal exactly what is happening. He is scornful of those who cast him down, and wants to wage a war against them.

Hey, it fits. In any case, however, this is a beautiful song as are most of VNV Nation's works.
