Toto – Africa Lyrics 16 years ago

I know, I know, doesn't contribiute to the "meaning" of the song, but it's awesome nonetheless. That guy friggin rocks.

Gary Moore – Still Got the Blues (For You) Lyrics 18 years ago
There are a few songs where the lead guitar communicates vibe and emotion better than any vocal you could apply to a song. This is one of those songs. I have heard criticism of GM saying that he is guilty of "over-playing", and in some cases it may be true. But this is one of those rarities where every note, every lick is timed, spaced, and played just perfectly, where the whole is much greater than the sum of it's parts.

Also, the melody is the same as the chorus in Lionel Richie's "Hello".

Toto – Rosanna Lyrics 19 years ago
I really dig that show burntfire. Too funny.

If I recall correctly, the keyboard player dated Rosanna Arquette for a while and dumped him for some Hollywood big-shot. Strangely enough though, one of the other guys wrote the song, not the keyboard player. Good song, though. I always enjoy hearing the little musical intricasies that accompany the song, but not pervade it.

Van Halen – Hot for Teacher Lyrics 19 years ago
I've heard that the drums in the beginning were mic'ed and mixed to sound like the enging of a top-fuel funny car. I guess it does kinda sound like one....

Kick ass song, and one of the all time classic videos. What male in his 30's doesn't remember that teacher ripping off her shirt and dancing on the desk? Great stuff.

Dream Theater – Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding (Elton John cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
When the subject of "Best Cover Song" pops up between you and your friends (and it will), this one should get at least a strong mention. My Mum's a huge Elton John fan, but when I played this for her she acquired the CD very soon after.

Metallica – The Call of Ktulu Lyrics 21 years ago
I am glad to hear another person say that. I too noticed how much more complex and talented they grew with each album. Such a shame w/Cliff, because while I thoroughly enjoy Justice, I am a little saddened that #1 - he died before the album was done being written, and #2 - you can't help but think that Justice WITH Cliff would have been that much more of an achievement, that he and we would have realized a true musical pinnacle, stretching boundaries and them smashing them down like so much rubbish. Don't get me wrong here; it is still a technical marvel, and still my favorite Metallica album. But Jason was new, and the bass lines largely copied the rhythm guitar. He had not the time to develop his voice in the band and didn't (ever) have much of a say in the writing or arrangement process.

And now that I have depressed the hell out of everyone (sorry), I'll put on the album and remember younger days.

Boston – Amanda Lyrics 21 years ago
I have always been a Boston fan. I used to date this girl named Amanda a while back. I dug her OK, but I didn't have really major feelings for her. It used to make me nervous when this song would come on, because I would really get into it (the way I get into ANY good tune), and when I would return from the throes of the all-mighty air-guitar riff, she would be in much disdain.

The Beatles – In My Life Lyrics 21 years ago
Though The Beatles are most definitely not above veiled drug references in their music, I agree with Bobo. And like many of the entries before, this is my favorite Beatles song as well.

Queensrÿche – Empire Lyrics 21 years ago
I would like to add....

(Spoken)
In fiscal year 1986-87, local, state, and federal governments spent a combined total of 60.6 million dollars on law enforcement.
Federal law enforcement expenditures ranked last in absolute dollars, and accounted for only 6% of all federal spending.
By way of comparison, the federal government spent $24 million more on space exploration, and 43 TIMES more on national defense and international relations than the law enforcement.

I know it may sound petty, but this song strikes a chord with me, not just with the musical dynamic, but with the implied message. I have had several friends join law enforcement straight out of high school with dreams of spreading justice and protecting the innocent, only to awaken to a harsh reality that the law enforcement is the red-headed stepchild of government funding, thereby limiting its effectiveness. Kind of disheartening, to say the least.

Best. Theater. Song. Period.

King's X – Complain Lyrics 21 years ago
One of the more straight-forward songs this band has. It seems to me that it's about how little your problems are in comparison to the bigger picture. Probably rather obvious.

Interesting take undisturbed. I am glad that you wrote that, because it made me think (for once, hehe).

Great analysis! Kudos to you. Struggling with one's christianity seems to be a theme amongst alot of Creed's music.

Creed – Bullets Lyrics 22 years ago
Lol@anarchy....that is some funny shit man. Song has a cool riff, that's what hooked me. I hate to say it, but i kind of agree with the folks dissing the vocals, in a tonal sense. I thought Stapp could have put a little more life into the vocals, because I have heard other work and I expected a little more from him, but what is there works ok. Song sounds great cranked. As for the meaning, I don't know absolutly, but the general theme suggested seems correct, Durst\critics.

Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire Lyrics 22 years ago
I cannot shake the story, be it true or not, that I heard long ago that this song is about JC and Tammy Wynette in a hotel room, and using BENGAY rather than KY! I have no idea as to the validity of that tale, but DAMN is it funny! I love Johnny Cash, though. He's the Man In Black, for cryin' out loud! Quite possibly the coolest guy, ever.

Metallica – The Call of Ktulu Lyrics 22 years ago
Hey, I like beans myself. And I am glad you like the song. While I disagree with jigo's opinion, I certainly don't think he or she is, as you so eloquently put it, "full of shit", and I'd like to think that neither am I. You would not be the first to think I was, truly, but all others before have either kept their opinions to themselves or expressed them as just that, an opinion. As far as sounding technical, I am technical, therefore, I sound that way. Kinda like some people sound juvenile and critical, obviously trying to compensate for an inferiority complex, low self-esteem, or some other psycholgical disorder by lashing out at others. I certainly wouldn't ask a college professor of business to give a lecture on business ethics, and then blast him for his methods and principals.

But, then again, that's just my opinion......technically.

This song means the world to me. Not for any musical reason, just a certain time and place that I heard it with a special someone. Thanks Paula@FLW

Pantera – Floods Lyrics 22 years ago
This is one of those songs that just ends too soon for me. I really would have liked to see some sort of guitar epic here, because the overall feel of the song is just tremendous. Really emotive playing at the end.

Pantera – Planet Caravan Lyrics 22 years ago
Solo is one of the best. Darrell really kicks back on this one, showing a little more jazzy-artsy style contrasting his usually devastating, in-your-face approach that we all love.

Foo Fighters – Everlong Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with the earlier statement. To say a song, any song, is the greatest or best ever is extremely subjective. I guess it would be PC to say that it was the greatest ever to YOU. And even so, how do you judge a songs greatness? My guess is that the greater the song is to you is directly related to how much the song moves you. I know good songs, to me, give me a certain feeling. It's like they flip a certain switch in me and I instanly just KNOW that it is good.

With that being said, this IS my favorite song. I realize the heaviness of that statement, but I cannot think of another song that has moved me more, or flicked that aforementioned switch more, than this song. It is not off of my favorite album, not are they my favorite band. But this song does just does it for me. And if that isn't a rant, I don't know what is.

Bon Jovi – Wanted Dead or Alive Lyrics 22 years ago
This is just one kick-ass tune. If I am not mistaken, it's about the band's life on the road, incessantly touring as BJ is known for doing, and the trials and tribulation therof. THE quintessential song from this band, in my mind anyway......

Metallica – Fade To Black Lyrics 22 years ago
Great song, obviously dealing with suicide. I remember going to a youth group meeting when I was a wee lad, and being forsed to watch a tape on "the evils of heavy metal" and how "rock and roll is Satan's tool" and all that general crap. They took example of this song in particular, playing it the song and scrolling the words and the screen karaoke-style. I also remember the entire group, preachers and all, staring at me gape-mouthed when I was absentmindedly singing along.....lol, that was some great shit!

Metallica – The Call of Ktulu Lyrics 22 years ago
Gots ta disagree with Jiqokussabre. Metallica really communicate the vibe from the book well in this piece. Plus, anyone ever notice the Mustaine writing creit, and how the D minor progression sounds a lot like "Hangar 18"?

Metallica – Battery Lyrics 22 years ago
Anyone who has truly experienced rage knows that there is hardly anything more potent and pure than that rush, and they are reminded of that when they hear this song. The song structure itself is a microcosm of the event, with the clean guitar piece in the beginning, escalating to that frenzied riff. Hmmmph, think I'll go out and smash something now...........

Weezer – Say It Ain't So Lyrics 22 years ago
I seem to remember reading something fairly close to excerpt from sweetsuz from above, so i tend to lean toward that theory. I was SO glad to hear this song when it came out, as it crushed the notion that they were a novelty band. This is one of those songs that just sound REALLY good cranked up loud as hell!
