I think the song is about struggling with your inner demon's. Trying to stay clean in life, and do the right thing. Fighting temptations and all that. It's about realizing that you're worth more than what bad things like drug's and what not can do to you. |

It's about being infatuated with someone, and they're no good for you. You stop caring about the right things in life for this person and slowly become just as bad them.
I picture a music video with Chino sitting, watching a pale herion-addict type girl dance on stage. She's dancing for him only, like a private lap dance. While she's dancing, and as the video progresses, Chino starts looking older, and pale. Eventually the building they're in starts burning down, but Chino just keeps his eyes on the girl. Meanwhile, the whole time this is going on, the "Good Chino" is performing the song while looking on through and two-way mirror in dissapointment. The whole is there too, of course. |

I totally disagree with def linus, I don't see one lyric that suggests "him" being unsure of what "she" wants.
I feel that it's about two people that are on a higher level of whatever it is that they do, and that they're just showing each other what they can do. In the begining they start off doing things that are nice, but common. The way Chino sings "How neat, I'm impressed," sounds really sarcastic to me like they're just showing each other the basics. Then later on in the song, they really start getting into each other once they've got past all the superficial BS. |

I think the song is about being in a relationship for a long period of time, and the relationship isn't really bad, but you're just bored with it. The only thing that you still enjoy, and keeps you hanging in(the ropes hang) is the sex. You care about the other person and don't want to hurt their feelings or anything, so you don't break up with them. Hence the lyric "The ropes hang(Sex) to keep us all awake(Keeps the relationship going)" |

First I'll tell you what I think it's SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT. Then I'll tell you WHAT IT MEANS TO ME.
I think it's supposed to be about meeting a girl/guy that is really fake, and superficial. I like to call them "pop people." Anyway, it's about meeting one of those people, and feeding their ego to get what you want. Sex/money/ect. OR It's about two people doing drugs, which is extremly obvious from the lyrics if you ask me. The ocean is a metapore for drugs, falling off the earth is about the feeling of being high.
Now what it means to me personally is the following. I was in a relationship with a girl for about two years, and during that time I stopped talking to all my friends, and family. Eventually they stopped calling me, and kinda forgot about. Then when me and the girl broke up, I felt like I fell off the earth. I put all my friend and family on the backburner for so long that I had no would to talk to, hang out with, etc. |

This has become my favorite Deftones song! I love it. Anyway this is what I STRONGLY feel the song is about....
Two people being in a love/hate relationship. I feel that it's about somebody trying to force something on someone, or change them. Maybe it's a style of clothing or the type or music. Maybe it's something deeper like forcing a religion on someone. That's where I think the lyric "And if you don't believe, I think you should," comes from. I kinda feel that it's about forcing someone to do something that is right, and they know it's right, but they don't want to do it. Due to the person trying to force them to do they right think, the other lover becomes bitter, and the relationship slowly deteriarates.
That's my two cents. |
