Yeah ... really reminds me of the story of the Tower of Babel ...
In so many of the songs, Chris writes from the pint of view of a cynic who sees the people and the world around him on their downfall, but can do nothing about it except say "I told you so." ... like in this song, he sees the way money goes to people's heads and makes them think that they can now do the things that only nature can do, they have the power to create and take control of anything, and sway the impossible in their favor, etc. He sees this and maybe he's even expressed his thoughts, warned them ... but even so much as him cautioning them against what they're doing is something they can't bear to hear ... "I'm the wreck of you/I'n the death of you all" ...

I think it's about the way people treat the sort of ... "worker ants" of society. Like how there'll be people there to do menial jobs, or do the things tht we just take for granted or don't see as really important. And people will look down on them, their responsiblity and their imporatance, and see them as bottem of the barrel, lowest wrung, etc. But all these people are seeing the indiffernce and apathy towards them and know that if not for them, the people who are so above them wouldn't have any way to get where they are, and that if they fall sometime in their life, the people who look down on them will fall twice as hard, and twice as easliy.
Or maybe it's just about people who think they're powerful and important not seeing how ordinary and flawed they really are, leaving that "job" up to people they see as being below them. I hope that was more coherent, sorry. |

I didn't really have much of a clue about the lyrics, because I just can't seem to wrap my head around Chris Cornell's lyrics ... some of the absolute deepest lyrics I've ever read ...
Musically, though, this song is one of the most creepily depressing, disturbing songs I've ever heard, because of the sludgy, doomy guitars. The Apocolypse idea just adds so much more to the creepiness of this song.

I geuss the thing in the last verse, the kid could have parents who are Pentocostal (aka being filled with the holy fire, writhing in ecstasy and speaking in tounges and shit), or who are just so devout and strict when it comes to religion and church that they're bordering on abusive of their son as far as retricting him with what's holy and good and what isn't, like so many fanatical religious people do with ther kids and fuck them up.
