Steve Miller Band – Jet Airliner Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah I agree with the catchy guitar riff, in fact I liked the riff when it was played in A and was called CROSSROADS, I'm referring the Cream arrangement. I'm going to try to find a mp3 of the paul pena version.

Tom Cochrane – Life is a highway Lyrics 17 years ago
Is it just me or did someone else notice a possible Rush reference? The line "Sometimes you turn your back to the wind" seems to be a possible nod to the line "I turn my back to the wind, before I start off again" from Rush's Time Stand Still, from five years earlier. Besides both groups being from the Toronto area of Canada, they have a mutual respect for each other and a friendly relationship. Tom Cochrane was the man who inducted Rush into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. And I know that Tom likes to put messages in his songs.

Warren Zevon – Keep Me in Your Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
Has it been almost a year and a half already? Sadly and understandably the final song of Warren Zevon's life and carreer. It was the last song on the album to be recorded. It was recorded in his living room with the rest of his family. He was holding hands with them around a table and singing his swan song into the desktop mic. Vh1 did a special on the recording of the album I think anyone should watch it. There is so much that can be said about the man and his music that "Keep Me in Your Heart" goes without needing to be said. I think this may be slightly more beautiful and poignant than "Tears in Heaven". RIP Warren Zevon. Jan 24, 1947 - Sept. 2, 2003.

Van Morrison – Astral Weeks Lyrics 19 years ago
Irish?.........Well anyway I thought I'd add another little piece of info. This song was actually recorded last, kind of as an afterthought to fill space. In fact the session flutist had already gone home, the flute you hear in the song is the flutist who had been playing in Van's Jazz trio.

Rush – Closer to the Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
You can be the Captain
I will draw the Chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the Heart

In my and Alex Lifeson's opinions this is the ultimate Rush song. To me some of the most beautifully sparce lyrics ever written. This song definately presents a strong positive message without saying much at all. This and Spirit of Radio are my favorite Rush songs. But this one wins. Even the audience agrees. My band does both songs, but Closer to the Heart always gets the biggest response. It's amazing. Our first performance was a battle of the bands against some other more established local teenage bands. We were given the last slot and did our set opening with Spirit of Radio and then our original metal/shred/hard rock originals and then I pulled out my acoustic 12-string and put in on a gracie stand and began the song. People went nuts, but i sometimes wonder if it was because i was playing a different instrument in a different style than the other bands. Then for the second verse I backed off and returned to bass duties and we rocked the song I must say and then closed with an impromptu jam at the end, a-la different stages, to push the song over the edge. Needless to say we ended up winning the battle. It was sweetness. But even almost 30 years this song is still a monster.

Rush – Freewill Lyrics 19 years ago
Song is (from what I take out of it) about Neil Peart's disdain for religion. This song is about horrible things happening like plague and murder that people blame on the gods."The stars aren't aligned Or the gods are malign"- Blame is better to give than receive". He also states that religion is some story that people made up (as in there really is no god) and use as an excuse to kill. "You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill". Basically in the song Freewill means atheism. Well that's what I got out of it. He writes about something similar in the song "Roll the Bones".

Rush – The Necromancer Lyrics 19 years ago
WOW! I'm amazed that noone has placed any comments for this amazing milestone. Rush's first epic. (BY-TOR and the Snowdog, doesn't count but It did lead the way , and this case the created the characters). I think this is the best song off of Carress of Steel. Much better than "The Fountain of Lamneth" in my opinion. But pt.III. Return of the Prince is an awesome song in its own right, my band loves to play it. For those who haven't heard it, I recommend it.

Rush – The Spirit Of Radio Lyrics 20 years ago
My favorite of all Rush songs. Classic. I saw them perform last week (I recommend everyone who can to do so) and they performed a medley to open the show including Finding my way, Anthem, Bastille Day and then concluded by launching flawlessly into this song. For me this was the high point of the show. But their performance of 2112: Overture and Temple was good too but since they didn't include the rest of the song it was not. But hey Rush rocks anyway.

Classic song from Caress of Steel. Kinda reminds me of Zeppelin, sort of like Over the Hills and Far Away. Surprised noone has commented. Maybe because everyone underrates this solid precursor to their masterpiece "2112".

Van Morrison – Crazy Love Lyrics 20 years ago
Hey don't forget Music that Aaron Neville did a dead-on cover for the movie Phenomenom. By dead-on i mean as far as voice, the music was a little different. THe other day i heard a cover of Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven) on a country station but it was very close to the original. I commend the artist for staying respectful to Van the Man and not butchering his great work. Can anyone tell me who it was?

Van Morrison – Listen To The Lion Lyrics 20 years ago
Hey First Comment. One of the best songs ever. About not being afraid to do anyone, including love. He refers to his ancestors when they traveled from Denmark to Caledonia (for all you trivia buffs, Caledonia was the old name of Scotland, and Hibernia was the name of Ireland, Gaul was France.) in order to have better lives. He says just listen to the lion inside, your inner source of courage and bravery. That line
"And we sailed, and we sailed, and we sailed...
Away from Denmark
Way up to Caledonia
Away from Denmark
Way up to Caledonia"
is to me one of the greatest lines in music. It gives me goosebumps. I don't know why. Just listen and feel. as someone else said.

Van Morrison – Into The Mystic Lyrics 20 years ago
I noticed one problem with the lyrics. They forgot one of the most important lines in the song, and Van's career!. How could they leave out the classic
IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was the closing line to all of his early shows. It was his catch phrase. His equivilent to "does anybody remember laughter?". He did name one greatest albums after this line. The double live album "..IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW...." is his best, and one of the best live albums of all time.

To me the greatest Van song of all time. To me in ranks up there with Stairway. Although sadly the song, along with van, is the most underrated song of all time. I think Van is so great, especially in his 68-74 years he was on fire. Im shocked that he never became the superstar he should have been. You know his work was and is better than most of the dribble on the radio (no offense to anyone in particular). im just saying he is probably tied with bob dylan as the greatest songwriter in rock history. does anyone agree? i also agree with jazzy and corissa. Van is the Man.

Van Morrison – It Stoned Me Lyrics 20 years ago
to show the greatness of Van. One day in my high school math class i was sitting next to my 'gangsta' friend( you know the type) and i sang to myself out of boredom: Half a mile from the county fair And the rain keep pourin' down Me and Billy standin' there
With a silver half a crown Hands are full of a fishin' rod And the tackle on our backs We just stood there gettin' wet With our backs against the fence and he suddenly belted out OOH the water hope it dont rain all day. And i looked, shocked, at him and then in unison we sang aloud And it stoned me, and the rest of the chorus to a round of applause from our class. Crazy huh? well to me it was. Van is the Man.

Van Morrison – Slim Slow Slider Lyrics 20 years ago
Sadness. It seems that she has in fact a drug addiction( i believe heroin specifically because of the white horse, metaphor, and the fact that ireland had a very bad heroin problem). Not only that she has left Van for a richer man( who also happens to own the stereotypical love-gone-bad mobile, the Cadillac). Maybe shes been revealed to be shallow and only interested in money and was lying the whole time. or maybe wants the richer man to pay for her drug habit.? who can say. but the last lines are the most disturbing of the album. He reveals that she is dying. Is she dying on the inside, by becoming more and more unloving and interested in greed (remember the avarice from the first song?!?! a ha, is that the connection? ((Avarice- love of money, greed))? or is she dying physically, from the heroin or something else? we never know . but what we do know is that he is still in love with her dispite it all and her pain is still his pain. This album is to me one of the single greatest works in modern music. if not the best. It has a quality unique to Van and only Van of 1968.

Van Morrison – Ballerina Lyrics 20 years ago
ANother iffy song. the girl has become some sort of performer(actress, singer, stripper, prostitute). She also may have a drug addiction. As hinted to by Young Lovers innocence is over. Van and her are grown and at least somewhat more mature. He begins to see that life isnt really pretty and happy at all. He still loves her deeply but she has changed. But he is trying to make things work. Where will this lead?

Van Morrison – Madame George Lyrics 20 years ago
This is about a transvestite living in Belfast. THis man is very nice and socialable. Every one goes to his parties and eats his food but wont even look him in the eye. He is a very sad character and Van feels for sympathetic and maybe even empathetic. Then the cops show up or maybe george gets frustrated with the whole thing and just says that in order to clear the room. He then realizes he doesnt belong and has to leave. But he must leave out the back so noone will see him(is he ashamed?) He decides to go from the Sandy Row(protestant Ireland) to Dublin (Catholic). ANd finally he says goodbye in one of the most beautiful touching parts in music, in my opinion. This song is a little iffy on the exact meaning but in any event its sad stuff.

Side 2. Hes got the girl and is happy. Seems like the relationship was consumated between the time the first side ended and the time you put this one on.(thinking in terms of original LP) All very sweet but does anyone think that the Davis' bass is a little out of place?? hmm? a little harsh?overpowering? maybe even violent??is everything good at every level?

Van Morrison – Cyprus Avenue Lyrics 20 years ago
Different sound this time. More leisurely. He seems to enjoying a stroll down Cypress Avenue, the biggest richest street in town (if your from new orleans, think st. charles-ish) and hes ''walking down''. he seems to have somehow made a step up in the world. As hes peacefully strolling he lets us know whats going on. He and girl hooked up. She picks him up and wants to go driving but hed prefer to walk down the street with her. So he got his wish. But will the happiness last? End of Side 1

Van Morrison – Sweet Thing Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually in this album/story he is progressing from innocence to experience. (Notice the Blake reference? van was a fan of him too) In this song he is finally pleading to the girl. He is telling her everything he feels and is hoping she will go for it. Will she? Try Cypress Avenue.

Van Morrison – Astral Weeks Lyrics 20 years ago
By the way he is poor and she is rich. Also he is big into astrological stuff. The Astral plain is the level above this one, its weird because things arent what they seem in that level. Things can come and go in exist randomly. It is believed that one can possibly wish something hard enough in that realm and it will occur in this world. Also kissing the eyes has something to do with Tir Na Nog. Irish folklore. He thinks that if his eyes are kissed it will give him sight into the the Astral plain. Deep. i dont fully understand it myself.

Van Morrison – Astral Weeks Lyrics 20 years ago
What can be said that hasn't already been said out the Man, the Myth, the Mystic, the Morrison. This as you know is the very first song on his first solo album.(Not counting what he did for Bert Bang's Bang records) It is the beginning of the story of the album Astral Weeks. It starts off in a style similar to maybe Dylan. With the semi-concrete images. Viaducts of your dreams?. In any case some of the most beautiful lyrics ever. Sets the story of a boy, a younger Van in Belfast, who is taken by this one girl that he yearns for and imagines himself with her. He's got it bad for her. But her persists in the next song. Beside You

They were not done yet. Jimmy Page was not a fan of the soft stuff like this song. However he and the fan were actually proud of Fool In Rain. But he and John Bohnam were both ready to move on. They were already planning a harder, riff-heavy album much like their first 2 albums. But alas, What Is and What Will Never Be. :(

Led Zeppelin – Achilles Last Stand Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is not about mythology or anything like that. At least not in a entirely. This song is about Robert Plant and his wife Mauren's trip to Morocco in , if memory serves me, 1975. It was spring, hence the mention of April at the beginning, there was no tour scheduled or rather ''no commitment'' so they decided to go on vacation. They had always wanted to go there and they finally had the chance, hence ''to live the dreams we always had". And Atlas is a the tall mountain in Morrocco, and just plain tall period, somewhere around 5,000 meters I believe. So came the lyric ''The mighty arms of Atlas, Hold the heavens from the earth''. I guess he did it make it a little mythological with his metaphors. And of course, the lyric ''I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way'' refers to sight seeing and general touring the Moroccan landscape. It was orginally nicknamed The Wheelchair Song by the band. Well there is Achilles Last Stand explained.
