Third Eye Blind – Slow Motion Lyrics 20 years ago
if you listen to this song, it sounds like it's a beautiful song. if sounds seductive almost, like a love song even. actually, the first time i heard it and didn't listen to the lyrics, i told my friend it was gorgeous and she had to DL it. well, she came back to me and told me i was sick; had i heard the lyrics? so i listened. i think the irony of the song is what makes it so powerful. on the surface it is so seductive, you can't stop listening to it, yet the lyrics are aobut such horrible, graphic, terrible things. but we STILL LISTEN TO IT. and love it. it's like what's going on in our lives today. there is so much violence, corruption, and awful things that are blatantly exposed to us everyday, and we become numb to it. it doesn't even shock us anymore. moreover, we are ENTICED by things like violence, drugs, and sex. this song should shock us. we should turn it on and never want to listen to it again, because the lyrics, if you take them literally as i doubt they were meant to be taken, are basically SICK. this song is one of the best, most effective displays of what's wrong with our society today. you mask anything with an alluring appeal - and we'll love it. it doesn't matter what lies beneath the surface. we like this song, and look at what it's about. gratuitious sex, violence, drugs, among other things, and someone finding these things beautiful, and WE LIKE A SONG ABOUT THIS, because it sounds good. like the lyrics say - the joke's on us.

i think the lyrics are pretty straightforward. i LOVE the line "i went because you said you'd be there". it just conveys so much more than it says.

ohhhh...this is my favorite o.a.r. song, possibly ever. still completely clueless to what the lyrics mean, but i love all the references to other o.a.r. songs ("crazy game of poker", "black rock", delicate few"). anybody with any clue into the lyrics?

Howie Day – Perfect Time Of Day Lyrics 21 years ago
I found in an interview what Howie had to say about this song...it's just about that perfect time of day, to seize an opportunity. Just when you find that perfect moment to make your move, you better take the chance, because you'll never get it back.

Howie Day – Collide Lyrics 21 years ago
to me this means simply: no matter how bad things get, or how wrong their timing may seem, they will always wind up back to each other because it is meant to be.

i love the "don't stop here / i lost my place / i'm close behind" part -- he's saying even if it seems like we're falling apart or growing apart, don't stop, keep going, because i'm right behind you.

Howie Day – End Of Our Days Lyrics 21 years ago
this is truly one of the most beautiful howie day songs. simple lyrics, but it really fits with my life right now. basically he's just talking about some kind of forbidden relationship. other people (friends? ex-girl/boyfriends? current girl/boyfriends?) don't want them to be together. but these two people are so wrapped up in each other that they need to be together. and while their relationship is a little strange, it's something beautiful, and they'll eventually escape from everybody else and their opinions because they don't understand.

Howie Day – Secret Lyrics 21 years ago
i agree with pianorocker completely. they're two people so into each other and they know it, and for some reason it's not going anywhere because she won't admit her secret.

love the lines "it’s your love affair / on a quiet sunday afternoon / and your speedy pills / you should know i’m into you". i can totally relate, when you KNOW that somebody is attracted to you, and you KNOW that they know you're completely into them, but they won't let you do anything about it! and you just keep wondering, "why would you try not to see?"

Howie Day – Brace Yourself Lyrics 21 years ago
my guess is it's about a past lover, or someone with whom he has a very on-off relationship. and now he's in love with her again. i love the bit about the false alarm, it's like he's saying maybe i'm not really in love this time, and i just need to hold my breathe and think this through.

Straylight Run – Mistakes We Knew We Were Making Lyrics 21 years ago
basically, this song is just about a relationship that went wrong, maybe because of a big fight. it goes without say that the relationship is doomed and there's no point in even trying to fix it (it's all implied / "you'll die trying to live this down. you might as well forget it.").

but he doesn't want to give up. he wants to give this one last try, because he doesn't want to be left wondering "what if we could have fixed it?" (still, i'm convinced that wondering what if is the worst thing there is).

so they're going to try again. they're going to take some time off to think about where they went wrong, to cool off their feelings, then try at it again. (so we bottled and shelved all our regrets / let them ferment and came back to our senses / drove back home and slept a few days / woke up and laughed at how stupid we used to be)

but it's not like it used to be, it's not what he imagined. (all these lines fall short of what i had in mind / a failed attempt to capsulize a feeling / so i just try fail and try and try again / someday i swear i'm going to get it) they can't revive what they had before this. but he STILL doesn't want to give up. he's just going to keep on trying, even though it's becoming pretty clear that this relationship is officially doomed.

and he knows that eventually whatever fight or bad thing they're going through, they'll get over it eventually (we'll get over it / sad, strong, safe and sober). things will move on and seem normal, and even though they can maybe be together again and know what they did wrong the last time and how not to do it again, it will never ever be like it used to be. (we'll move fo rward / and know where we went wrong / but "you can't go home again.")

Counting Crows – Anna Begins Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow, I've read a lot of these and I normally am open to most opinions, but some of these just seem waaay off. Anyway, here's my two cents (or ten).

I really do think that the meaning of this song is quite simple. They both began this relationship as something meaningless, a fling, maybe just purely a physical, sexual relationship. "My friend assures me, "It's all or nothing." / I am not worried /I am not overly concerned / My friend implores me, 'For one time only, make an exception.' / I am not worried": He's got this cocky attitude that he can control his emotions. His friends tell him that it has to be all or nothing, but he thinks he is stronger than that. "I am not worried I am not overly concerned / with the status of my emotions / 'Oh,' she says, 'you're changing.' / But we're always changing": Again with the cocky attitude. I'm not worried, I can take this, I don't fall in love. But she notices that he's changed lately, he's acting differently, and maybe she has her suspicions that he loves her. But he won't admit it.

The lines "But it's not all that easy so maybe I should / Snap her up in a butterfly net Pin her down on a photograph album" show that he doesn't know what it is about this girl, but there's something about her that he can't understand. She doesn't fit the mold of previous relationships; he can't pin her down and say this is what she is. "I am not worried I've done this sort of thing before", aka been with a girl but not really been too emotionally involved. He's heard that it has to be all or nothing, you either have to be in love or you aren't, but he wants to believe there's shades of grey in between.

He just keeps telling himself, this isn't love. She probably knows in the back of her mind that it is, but is hesistant on bringing up the issue because he just keeps denying it. Neither of them is ready for such an involved relationship, or to fall in love, but its becoming quite apparent that he already has fallen in love; he just doesn't want to admit it. "She's talking in her sleep / It's keeping me awake and Anna begins to toss and turn / And every word is nonsense but I understand and / Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing": It's one of those little things, it's becoming more and more apparent that he is in love with her. And he's not ready for it.

So, in a nutshell: The cocky guy who doesn't fall in love falls in love and at first can't admit it.

Dashboard Confessional – Hands Down Lyrics 21 years ago
You know what? I don't think this song is too much focused on lyrics, as DC's songs have been in the past. This song is just about the best day of his life. The lyrics are relatively simple, with a few clever, witty lines here and there (from "Safe in here from all the stupid questions / 'Hey, did you get some?' / Man, that is so dumb" to "So we can get some"), which make me laugh. He's trying to make a point that at the end of the day, we're all just trying to feel a certain way.

The ending, is so full of emotion and you can really feel it. It's simple lyrics, nothing too insightful, just little sentiments, recapturing every little detail of the perfect day of just being with someone who feels as passionately about you as you feel about them. But his voice is so full of longing and passion that you almost could ignore the lyrics and still understand the emotion.

It really is a beautiful song, not because it has great lyrics or anything. I think great lyrics and all the passion would be too much all together, sometimes you need a balance. It's great because it's simple lyrics with a lot of raw emotion.

Also...jack1ynn, I completely agree with you. This is songMEANINGS.net, not reasonswhyyoushouldhatebandsthatgomainstream.net or omgherearesongsthatremindmeofmysuperdupersweetboyfriend!.net. I just want to come on here to find what other people think about the meanings of songs. But instead, you have to sort through a load of shit including people whining about mainstream bands, fighting, and saying "man i love this song like dude!"

Saves the Day – At Your Funeral Lyrics 21 years ago
God! I just came on here for a little insight into what this song meant, but I can't even sort out between all the immature comments about whether or not STD is sellout band and whether or not true fans have to like all their older songs. Oh, please. Everybody is entitled to enjoy music, whether they like the beat or the lyrics or the rhythm. You don't have to have memorized the past of the band and every single one of their song lyrics just to like their music. Fans are people who enjoy the music made by a band. And if you don't like a band or a song just because it is popular, then maybe you didn't like it for the right reason in the first place! Be a little open minded. Quit being immature and let's talk about what this website was created to talk about, the meanings of the songs.

Anyway! My intepretation of this was something like what's been said in the, oh, fifteen comments that are actually about what the song means! A friend or someone close has some kind of problem, most likely, with drugs, and is slowly killing themselves. He wonders if the friend has lost their value for life so much that they wouldn't even try to save themselves, just continue doing their drugs and die. And maybe when they die, he'll feel responsible for the death, like maybe he didn't do enough to help, and that by just watching he was making the problem worse. So maybe he feels like he'll die too, but he'll be the one that nobody really notices.

I'm a little confused about the line"I'd offer you my hand but it would hurt to much to watch you die." Why would they die if he offered help? Maybe I'm misinterpreting the song..

Saves the Day – This Is Not An Exit Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow... this is definitely my favorite Saves the Day song. A lot of people have suggested this is a song about overcoming suicide, which I believe it is. illmatic has a good point, but I don't think that's quite it; that'y my opinion. Just look at the title, "This Is Not An Exit". Suicide is NOT an exit.

"Tonight will be the night that we / begin to ease the plugs out of the dam. "
Plugs out of the dam. It's like water, which is a huge reference in this song, that can't move forward because there's plugs blocking it from moving forward, or moving at all. The "plugs" are metaphorical for all the burdens of life; you've got to get rid of them so you can move forward instead of being stuck in the mindset of wanting to end your life.

And we will stand knee deep in the flow, / the undertow will grab our heels and won't let go. / And while we hold, / our legs quivering, / the water rises now to our teeth / when we just let go "
It feels like you're drowning in your problems, and they may be hard to overcome, and just when they start to pull you under, when you're just about to sink and drown, you let go of all your problems, and suddenly you're not so weighted down, and you can fly (hence the next line).

"and sail belly up to the clouds, / the rocks scraping our backs. / To breath in the air will be / the only thing that we have"
You've just let go, and begun to move forward, even though there are things behind you, in your past that have hurt you and maybe are still hurting you (aka the rocks scraping your BACK). Even if all you can do right now is breath, it's good enough for now.

"and all the wasted nights / and empty moments / in our lives flushed away / as we sway with the rhythm of the waves bobbing us up. / Crests fall to troughs we feel our gills open up."
This sounds like a way of just saying, "let it all go". Just flush it all away, cleanse yourself of all your pain and sadness and anything that made you want to kill yourself, and you'll feel "your gills open up"; you'll feel as though you can breathe again and you can carry on.

"and if the hook sets in the bottom of our lungs, / we'll rip it out and lick the blood off with our tongues."
Just because something hurts you, doesn't mean you can't overcome it. You can be strong and survive it.

"The despair can ravage you / if you turn your head around to look down the path that's led you here, / cause what can you change? / You're a vessel now floating down the waterways. / You can take your rudder and aim your ship, / just don't bother with the things left in your wake."
This means, to me, you can't change what's happened that's led you to wanting to kill yourself, but you CAN change the future. You don't want to end it here, with no good memories. You can either let yourself crash somewhere, or you can take control. You have the power and control to make newer, happier memories, as long as you don't look back.

"the actor in this play. / And you walk across the stage, / take a bow, hear the applause, / and as the curtain falls, / just know you did it all / the best that you knew how / and you can hear them cheering now. / So let a smile out and show your teeth / cause you know you lived it well."
You don't want your departure to be something sad and miserable that happens while you're depressed. You want to be able, at the end of your life, to smile and know you lived your life well. And you are the actor in the play called life, you have control and ultimately, you will decide if your life is good.

I think the purpose of using "we" and "our" in the beginning of the song and later switching to "you" is to show that at first you might need some guidance, but in the end you will learn to make it on your own. I really love how this song is written like poetry; Saves the Day has so many lyrics that may seem confusing at first but that are just begging for a deeper look.

Brand New – Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades Lyrics 21 years ago
screw the radio had the best translation i've read so far: "I think this song has to do with the loss of virginity.. he builds it up in his mind to be this great thing but when it comes down to it he's scared. the girl feels like she has to sleep around to be loved and he feels like he has to sleep with her to fit in.. also, it sounds like two sides to a story the way the song breaks and fades" it's right on. the girls thinks love is this, sex. and the guy knows it's not, but he's trying to pretend that sex is something he needs to do because it's supposed to be so glorious and in the media, guys are supposed to be the sex obessed ones. i love how this is flipped around.

this isn't really talking about a specific graduation, in my opinion. it's more about people tell you you're not going to be anything, and wanting to prove them wrong. i think it's about wanting to be able to feel proud about yourself and what you do.

hands down, best lyric of the song. i can totally relate...sometimes when you get out of a relationship, you're feeling so alone, and then it's like all of a sudden you realize you possess this kind of power like, you're suddenly unattached and you are your own person again.

it doesn't have to be just about pregnancy. 3eb's lyrics tend to take a specific experience and take it to a more general level. the general feel of the song is about a big change in somebody's life and all the feelings they get from it -- anxiety, worry.

Third Eye Blind – I Want You Lyrics 22 years ago
i think this is really about a guy who's with a girl and he doesn't want things to change as they get older and closer to death; he wants to stay with her, and after all the time that has passed, he still wants her.

"The suckers lose themselves in the games they learn to play / Children love to sing but then their voices slowly fade away / People always take a step away from what is true / That's why I like you around" - I think this refers to the way people get so caught up in all the things they can do that they forget how innocent and pure things can really be. Children are so innocent when they are younger but all that soon fades away. People are always scared of what is pure and innocent and true, but he likes this girl because she makes him think of how love should really be.
