Jem – They Lyrics 15 years ago
A quick excerpt from the above website, which essentially says what the kids are saying--

"This song is an essential part of Central African children's game: it's objective it's to practice the phonetics of their language; similar to a nursery rime ("Bingo was his namo!"): it has no meaning, no deep quandry about life, no subliminal messages. Just some kids playing and singing (to answer some thoughts that were going around in this thread). Because of which, it's kinda hard to find out what is they're actually saying; they maybe saying nothing at all... over here in Mexico we have some children's songs that are just rubbish: "Chu chuhua chu chuhua chu chuhua hua hua", (think train: "chu chu!" then a "wah!") so this is not uncommon in many world cultures."

I actually think this song IS about relationships.

When I listen to it, I think of being in a relationship with someone who is also your best friend in the whole world.

Although, I think if you look at the lyrics, it seems like it's someone she was with for a long time, and they realized they're not right for each other and have broken up but are still best friends, and can't seem to find anything better with anyone else...

Things like

"No regrets,"
"Can't Find Satisfaction Someplace Else"
"I can't give you what you need...we'll always be best friends."

I think this is the sweetest song in the world!

It's so funny, I came on here to leave a comment that this is the sexiest song ever and realized I had that same thought a year ago, apparently ^^^

I don't know for sure about the lyrics--they seem specific to something that might have happened to her, but the chorus...dead things, bad things, sad things have to happen...is kind of obvious. Well, the bad and the sad is. I think the "dead things" refers to relationships that have died...things like that have to happen. I love this song!

moist – Leave It Alone Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know much about Moist; I heard this song on a sountrack, but it makes me want to listen to more of their stuff. I agree with Yelraek, at first this sounds like a calm, sweet song. I only recently started listening to the lyrics, and then it sounds like it's overtly about a car crash. I think it has more to do with a breakup or the drifting apart of two people, and the analogy of a car crash is used. I love this song--it's sung with such feeling. I think the chorus, "Leave it alone...again, tonight" is kind of about the person experiencing this hardship and sort of just making it through each day by not really dealing with the issue, not thinking about it, "leaving it alone" and obviously the "again, tonight" shows that they've been doing it for some time.

Sister Hazel – Happy Lyrics 18 years ago
This was one of my favorites for a long time.

I think this is one of their few songs that is a bit cryptic...usually they're pretty straight forward.

"I remember watchin'
All the once upon a times
Remember thinkin'
Who's content and who's for rent
And you said don't you want to be like that man!?"

The speaker is remembering a time in his life when he was considering who around him was really happy and who was basically 'up for sale,' allowing others to control their life and their feelings. While this was going on, some person close to him (a girlfriend, maybe?) said "wouldn't you like to be like that man?" This implies that she's trying to sell him on the importance of money perhaps, or merely perhaps on the idea of basing one's life around someone ele's life.

"Oh No--No--No!
But then he cracks that smile
And that don't look so bad to me..... "

The speaker replies that that's not what he wants at all. He is content with his life...and yet, another look at 'that man' he sees him smile, which is a figurative implication at the idea that he takes another look at the man and thinks "maybe that kind of life WOULD be nice, after all."

At this point, the person who asked him to be like that man has frustrated him...he/she is causing the speaker to consider giving up a life which satisifies him and trading it in for something he doesn't really want.

The chorus reiterates this idea. The speaker is content, but that doesn't satisfy the person he's with.

"I remember thinkin'
How they thought that we should be
Remember feelin'
That might be you but that ain't me"

He is considering how everyone around him, not just this one girl/guy has ideas of how he should live his life, and he says to this person that 'that life' might be ok for them, but it's not what he needs/wants.

Obviously this song is just about someone fighting with their significant other. Even though he's saying 'get out,' I don't think he's sincere. I think even he knows that in a few hours/days things will be back to their normal, screwed-up selves....but that could be just me injecting my life into the song..!

Portishead – Wandering Star Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite song on the whole album. Clearly the references are biblical. Although things in the bible can be interpreted so many ways...so I don't know that the meaning is locked into anything because of the reference.

I think it is about someone sad/depressed....so much so that the 'wandering stars' (perhaps, as someone said, demons) are ENVIABLE. She's so upset that even an existence like that is more desirable than hers.

"Like a husk, from which all that was, now has fled"

I think that is how she feels...a husk is them empty void that WAS a full, alive piece of corn. She feels empty, and ueseless....but she wants still to be emptier, like the wandering stars. she doesn't want to be.

God, this song is soooooooo beautiful, even though it's very fatalistic.

I can see that.

It seems like the part after "see them point in your direction" has to do with how people today are just mindless automatons...in the point of view of the speaker....and technology traps us....

I just think the whole 'if you can't solve this riddle' thing is megaweird. Myabe it has to do with the idea that if we dont' figure out a way to really start living meaningful lives again, things are going to come to some sort of crucible.

The singer's voice on this track is amazing.

I've never really looked at the words before, so this is just a first impression, but it seems to me that it has something to do with a crazy relationship that these two people just rushed into...

"Sweet relief calms me down
Makes me drown "

Based on the later 'sheets are stained' reference, it seems pretty obvious to me what this is about. Unless the 'sheets are stained' just means they're living a careless life and not taking care of things they need to...hmmmm....

although the 'hotel shower' reference once again leads me to that subject which shall not be named ;)

"Silver phone
Connect us to someone
Who doesn't know
About these feelings we can't control"

This just reminds me of the fact that when you're in a sexual relationship with someone...when you're around other people (parents, friends, etc) you keep that part of yourself hidden...we don't like to acknowledge that part of ourselves when others are around

I think the rest of the parts of the song have to do with the idea that their relationship is invincible...a naive feeling that I think occurs all too often.

Great song!

Hooverphonic – Out Of Tune Lyrics 18 years ago
I changed my mind a little, or at least refined my opinion:

"Overwhelming as they are
Breeding hope by counting stars"

'they' are some sort of vaguely defined issues. So, this person is overwhelmed by something, and attempting to drum up hope within themselves.

"Merge the bitterness the pain
Which I'm sure
You can explain again"

Obviously the person is feeling both bitterness and pain at what was done to her (as we see later, the person being spoken about is a girl). I think the second two lines are a sort of sarcastic gibe at whoever hurt the girl...something along the lines of "I'm sure you've got some lame explanation for what you did this time, too..."

"One gets hurt when she feels small
( And she's longing for some peace )
Beeing the center of it all
( Slow attack but fast release ) "

Obviously this girl was made to feel small by this anonymous 'bad guy', and the second line is pretty obvious. The third line here I think provides some insight that the narrator doesn't think the girl is without blame. She was perhaps a bit selfish, and felt herself entitled to something that was maybe too lofty. The 4th line could mean many things, I think....perhaps she had known the person a long time before they hurt her (slow attack), and then quickly left her (fast release) or she's quickly getting over it.

"Hear the difference in vain
Out of tune but just not quite the same"

I think to hear the difference in vain is a reference to the idea that she realizes she's better off without this hurtful person, but that realization is in vain, because it isn't helping her feel any better. This second line doesn't make a whole lot of sense, just because something that is 'out of tune' is, by definition, 'not the same' as what it should be....I just, in my own purposes of understanding the song, try to replace the 'but' with an 'and', because then the whole thing makes sense. "out of tune AND just not quite the same." if anyone has any ideas of that line that explain it better, let me know....

any other ideas from someone else???

BoA – Duvet Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is actually pretty straightforward to me, when you look at it out of context with the show. Let's do a line-by-line: ;D

And you don't seem to understand
A shame you seemed an honest man

This is talking about someone she's been in a relationship with who seemed great at the time, but after some time int he relationship with him she's realized he isn't quite what she thought him to be--he's been deceiving her. By the wrods used, it's clear that the speaker is hurt and angry, not 100% sad or 100% mad, but a mixture of both, because she says it's a "shame," but realizes that he "doesn't seem to understand" and never will, so to be extra angry or sad is futile--it won't go anywhere with him.

And all the fears you hold so dear
Will turn to whisper in your ear

In the speaker's mind, her deceptive lover's need for deception is because of his own insecurities. He holds these insecurities very close to him, not allowing anyone to see them, and not telling anyone, but instead expressing them in negative ways, by being superficial and lying to people. Therefore, she claims that he holds the fears "so dear," but by saying that they will "turn to whisper in [his] ear," she means that at some point they will come back to haunt him. At some point, she feels, he will recognize that he's done wrong, but it'll be too late to fix things, so that the fears are only a whisper of what might have been at that point.

And you know what they say might hurt you
And you know that it means so much
And you don't even feel a thing

In these lines, she's expressing that somewhere, deep down, this man knows that eventually his deeds will catch up to him, and that something very bad will come of it, but it doesn't phase him--he "doesn't feel a thing," and is completely blind (at least on a conscious level) to the hurt that he will later incur.

I am falling, I am fading
I have lost it all

This is an expression of the grief and loss that she feels. Obviously, until recently in her mind, she had a perfect relationship. Anyone who has been in a long-term relationship knows that you come to rely on that person for your primary means of support--while you may have friends and family, you tend to rely on your significant other for most of your emotional needs. Thus, with this "emotional crutch" gone, she feels like she is falling...and that she is fading, as that other person tends to become your identity as well, she feels she has lost a part of herself. Therefore, she is both falling and fading, and has lost it all.

And you don't seem the lying kind
A shame then I can read your mind

This is kind of a repetition of the first lines. She is just reiterating the "A shame you seemed an honest many here," by stating once again that she wasn't just naive--he really did seem like a nice, honest, guy. However, she points out, she can read his mind. Obviously, this isn't literal--this has two other meanings, however. In a long-term relationship, you learn to "read" the other person--you know their thoughts, and what goes on in their minds. This is what she is saying here--that she's not stupid, and she understands what is really going on. Being able to read his mind here, also refers to the fact that she NOW can understand him, because she's found some sort of evidence of his deceptions.

And all the things that I read there
Candle lit smile that we both share

This line is a little more nebulous than some of the others, but I think she's bringing up how she can see more than just the deception going on within him. She's a very insightful person, clearly. She understands, as mentioned earlier, that his deception is based in insecurity. Therefore, she sees not only his faults (which make her angry), but his good points, and the nice times they had (which she is sad about, because she realizes she must give that all up due to his behavior). Thus, based on this information, I think she is saying that she can see more than the deception, and as an example of this, she brings up the "candlelit smile [they] both shared." This is an allusion to the good times they had, and I think the candlelit part is there to try and represent some specific memories as well as generally indicating good times.

and you know I don't mean to hurt you
But you know that it means so much
And you don't even feel a thing

By changing it to "I don't mean to hurt you," I think she's indicating that it wasn't her choice for this to happen, for them to break up, but becasue of his behavior, it has to be this way, whether she really wants to or not. She then says "you know that it means so much," as in, I believe, deep down he understands that what he did would end their relationship, he knows the true magnitude of it all, but he still can't feel remorse truly, because of his attitudes.

I am falling, I am fading, I am drowning
Help me to breathe
I am hurting, I have lost it all
I am losing
Help me to breathe

This is another repetition of the representation of her feelings of angst regarding the situation. She's asking for "help to breathe," because previously, I'm assuming, she could turn to him for that help, and now she's at a loss--no one is left for her.

As far as the title being "Duvet," I partially agree with Xian-thir. A duvet represents comfort, which is both what she is leaving behind and what she is seeking (isn't that what we all do each day on some level?). Also, though, when I hear the word duvet, I think of a Duvet-cover...something which is used to cover an old duvet and make it prettier. I think this represents the man, whose insecurities caused him to cover up his true self and lead a life of deception. Therefore, the comfort she had was not real.

Anyway, this is all the meaning OUT OF context with the show. In context, I think many of the allusions to relationships obviously must be thrown out of the meaning to relate it to the show.

Mostly applicable is the chorus. Lain, throughout the show, is being uprooted, and forced to consider things that most adults haven't even figured out. Therefore, she feels lost, and craves a hand to hold onto.

Also the "you don't seem to understand," and "it means so much" lines apply, because no one around her seems to consider the magnitude of everything that is really going on arond them--but it all holds a much greater significance than they all realize.

"All the fears you hold so dear will turn to whisper in your ear," in this line seems to mean that we all, as humans, have certain fears about life (what happens after we die? what is our true purpose? etc,) that we all have, yet fail to consider fully amidst the chaos of daily life. We push these thoughts aside for a later time which never truly comes. However, in light of the huge things happening in Lain's world, the implication is that the fears of each person will soon come to confront them, and they will once and for all be forced to face them.

Still, however, while people know, to some degree, this will one day happen, they still "don't feel a thing," they try to ignore it and pretend it won't happen.

Even the seemingly unapplicable lines of "A shame you seemed an honest man," and "you don't seem the lying type" can really fit here, when applied to society in the aggregate instead of merely a relationship. I believe it is implying that there are many people who seem wise, or good, or true to themselves, but in Lain's world, even these people fail to face reality the way they need to ultimately. Therefore, they seem good, but it's clear that ultimately they don't take things as seriously as they need to.

To me, this song works very well whether in context with the show or not. Also, I'm pretty sure this song is done by Boa the singer, not the group--I've heard her other songs, and it's the same voice.

Emiliana Torrini – Why? Lyrics 19 years ago
Does anyone have a good idea of what this means? I have some idea, but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

Basically I think it starts off talking about a relationship gone kinda bad...a kind of controlling guy "pretend only you, you know the answers."

Anyway, the girl feels abandoned by him somehow and is distraught. "I wait longing for you baby, there's no one around me wanting me."

Then the chorus:
"Is this what you want?
Do you want a piece of mind?
Tell me now,
Are you short of cash?
Our thing was made to last
Tell me, tell me now,
Tell me why?"

I think this indicates some anger coming into play. She feels the only reason he'd have for showing back up is because he wants something from her (i.e. money). And then she just wants to know why he hurt their relationship the way he did.

The next stanza indicates the speaker beginning to heal:
"Love don't mean nothing, cause I'm alive." She realizes she can move on and that a relationship is not everything there is to life. However, she still feels somewhat lost...
"With an airplane ticket, but nowhere to go."

So she begins to heal, but is still carrying the burden of this sadness on her.

Anyone have other ideas about this??
