this cd is incredible. i got the prerelease about a month ago. it's the full cd, just no jewel case, but ya this song is great. |

ok kids, this is just to clear everything up (look at pedro the lion and cool hand luke and you'll see i do a bit of this). i read the lyrics in the lyrics book thing and listened to the song at the same time to make sure i got everything right. if you're just reading the lyrics, and basing mine on them, let me explain something: at the end of the chorus ("Pitiful, so pitiful") the lyrics book says "Now so pitiful, so pitiful" but when i listened to the song, he never says "Now so" so that's why i didn't include that in these posted lyrics.

isn't God the only one who can show complete unconditional love? because of humans' sinful nature, our love toward one another can only be conditional. there are different degrees of our love; you may have what you think is unconditional love, but there is always something, some condition, that will push you over the edge. what i'm saying is that this song is about God's unconditional love for us. if you took the song for face value and only literally, then it could be between people, but if you appriciate the fact that it's about completely unconditional love, you will realize that it must be Chris expressing the love that he knows God has for him and everyone that takes their life into their own hands. |

i'm sorry if this ruffles anyone's feathers...but these are not lyrics to a song. this is a quote by St. Augustine that Cool Hand Luke put in their cd sleeve thing for the "i fought against myself" record. this also explains why they named their cd what they did (incase anyone was wondering). |

so about this song... it seems pretty self-explanatory to me, it's about two friends. one has gotten into some pretty bad stuff, but the other has kept his life fairly good. the good friend says that he ends up always pointing his finger at his friend, accusing him and criticizing him for the stuff he does, but all he really wants to get across is that he genuinely cares for this friend of his. and no matter what the lost friend has done, is doing, or will do, he can come back to his friend; he will always love him.
parts of this song can be taken as a metaphor of God and man, where God sees that man has wandered off and He just wants us to know that we can come back and He cares for us, but certain parts of the song imply that it is between two earthly friends. pretty much because God never "points the finger."
this may be my favorite song on the "I Fought Against Myself" record. |

i really dont think this song needs people digging very deep into it. it's a progression in the story about a man who spends his life living promiscuously and wastes it on material wealth and "success." this gets him nowhere, however, when his wife stabs him to death during one of their fights and at his funeral, the priest can't find anything consoling to say about his life. he just comes out with the truth. it's a slap in the face. it's the truth. we should live to the fullest; quality of life is so much more important than quantity. life is full of pain, but if you let God take care of your troubles, the best will come out of it. this man did not rely on God, so God did not bless him. obviously, there won't be much good that people can say about someone when they're dead if they did not live a life worth saying good stuff about.

BoomerangRalph --> the guy who made the first comment is not saying that Jesus is the one who stuck to the narrow path, he's saying that we are the ones who need to stick to the narrow path that Jesus has set out for us if we want to get to Him. I agree with him. that is what we need to do. sticking to the narrow path, however, is not just leading a good life; it is accepting the fact that Jesus died for everyone's sin and made it possible for us to go to heaven. when you believe this and that He rose from the dead 3 days after He died, then you will get to heaven.
I don't mean to be a bible-thumper, but here's an appropriate verse...
Romans 10:9-10

but yeah.
"The impact, the aftershave, the european cigarettes...etc" are all the hints that the wife is getting from the husband (unintentionally on his part, of course) that he is spending time with another woman. |

i'm sorry, Prometheus, but i must disagree. there is no relationship stronger than that between God and man. some people may value their romance higher than God, but there is nothing that God loves more than you and everyone else in this world. that is what he created us for, to love us and for us to love Him back with everything we are, and yes, to love Him more than anything or anyone else.
on to what this place is for... this song, to me, is the singer's way of professing his dependence and longing for God and all that He has to give us.
