It´s quite akward finding myself in the need to explain something like this to someone, but....anyway, here I go:
when you're carrying a gun, you may realize that maybe you are not the only one person carrying a gun around. Somebody' s gotta have a gun too, pal. So, considering a hipotetical situation where you and (an armed)"somebody" find yourselves in a problem(I mean a big problem, like arguing, swearing, threats and stuff...u can be in a Club, at the Mall, at the traffic...it happens all the time) and this somebody realizes that you are armed too. Do you really think that he will count on your balance of mind for you not to grab your gun? Will he wait for you to shoot first? Would he even take the time to think about it? Dude, he don´t even know you. Now you put yourself in the place of this somebody and I think you'll understand the paranoia about walking around with a gun.

I don´t get you, really. It´s not because you can´t find "umm hmm" at the dictionary that it can´t be meaningful. The word( a word, any word) is a living thing, Lakai...think about it. "umm hmm" can express so many things....even more than some actual and recognized words.
