I always thought the narrator in this song is being selfish. Her friend is exploring new things and meeting new people, but she thinks the friend should be who she, the narrator, wants. Sometimes people take different paths in life. |

I know it's not the main purpose of this song, but I always think of the "Married With Children" episode called "Hot Off The Grill" (season 4). Al Bundy is relaxing in a lawn chair in his back yard, drinking a beer, with his dog lying nearby, while a version of this song plays on his radio. |

I understand that this song is "officially" about a past relationship. For me, personally, it makes me think about my marriage. My husband and I have been together for almost fifteen years. Now we are going through difficult times. This song remind me of the past, of how we used to be. I want to believe that more good times are ahead. |

I think the narrator just wants his girlfriend/wife to see that he is serious about her. I've heard of people who cheated, or flirted heavily, because they felt unappreciated. They wanted to see if their partner "really cared". I don't agree with playing games like that, but some people do it. This song is a response to those games. |

I've never understood the line "I never put wet towels on the floor anymore 'cause..." Can someone explain what it means? Does she have a habit of leaving wet towels on the floor, and he used to nag her about it, or something? |

People sometimes say that you can't run away from your problems. I disagree. Sometimes you are not in a place that feels right, and a change would do you some good. For me, it's what this song is about. |

This song might be about a girl in high school, but I've also known adults like this. They "live beyond their means" and go into debt, trying to portray a certain image. Buying new cars and houses that are out of their price range, going to upscale stores and restaurants all the time, etc. They want to believe that everyone admires them. But many people don't respect and care about them as much as they think. |

One of our dogs is named Rose. We jokingly say some parts of this song to her: "Love grows where our Rose-doggie goes", "Her hair is kinda wild and free", "I'm a lucky owner and I've just got to tell her that I love her endlessly". |

I feel bad for the wife/partner in this song, the one who this man is choosing to stay with. She deserves someone who truly wants her. Not someone who will only stay because of guilt and obligation. |

Strangely, this song make me think about not being Christian anymore. The lyrics can describe some of my experiences with other Christians and organized religion. I am now agnostic or, more specifically, I might be agnostic deist or ietsist. I am fine with saying "I don't know" and allowing myself to wonder. |

I know that the song is "officially" about Candy Darling. However, Lou Reed said that it can be about anyone who has looked in a mirror and not liked what they saw. (According to the Wikipedia page for the song.) He thinks most of us have felt this way at some point. |
